About this listen

A Neverwhere short story from one of the brightest, most brilliant writers of our generation - the Sunday Times and New York Times best-selling author of the award-winning The Ocean at the End of the Lane.

The coat. It was elegant. It was beautiful. It was so close that he could have reached out and touched it.

And it was unquestionably his.

I love the mythical world that Neil Gaiman can make. The use of language, the imagery, humour all utterly superb.

I loved neverwhere and enjoyed this short but sweet story. However it has been a while since I read nevertheless so I am not sure how this fits into the story.

short but sweet

I'm new to the worlds of Neil Gaiman. This is the second one of his I've read in succession. What a writer!

Really enjoyed this short novella. Neverwhere is one of my all time favourite books and this story is all about what happened to the Marquis in between events in the book. I’m so pleased the author wrote this as a separate story. The Marquis definitely deserves his own book. Recommended.

I listened to this after listening to Neverwhere and was happy to be back in the world of London below. Gaiman's narration is 10/10, thoroughly enjoyed it.

Brilliant short story

It’s nice to have a little bit of closure into what happened to the Marquis after Neverwhere - I felt so bad for him when he died and lost all his things, but sounds like he just wanted his coat back. No mention of Door or Richard though, so I assume they found each other and have their own tale.

Some more of the Marquis…

How the Marquis Got His Coat Back is a delightful short story by Neil Gaiman, set in the fantastical world of London Below. This audiobook is a treat for fans of Gaiman's **Neverwhere**, as it follows the enigmatic Marquis de Carabas on a quest to retrieve his beloved coat—a symbol of his identity and style. The coat is not just a garment but a collection of memories and powers that define the Marquis.

The narrative is rich with Gaiman's signature charm and wit, and the audiobook format brings the characters to life with engaging performances. The story is a quick journey—snack-sized, as one reviewer put it¹—that satisfies the listener's appetite for adventure and the peculiar. It's a testament to Gaiman's storytelling prowess, with every sentence painting a vivid picture of the quirky, shadowy corners of London Below.

The world-building is exceptional, with each location and character adding depth to the already vibrant setting. The Marquis' journey is fraught with danger and intrigue, introducing listeners to the Shepherd's of Shepherd's Bush and even a glimpse into the Marquis' family².

Overall, "How the Marquis Got His Coat Back" is a fantastic listen for those who enjoy a blend of urban fantasy and adventure. It's a story that leaves you wanting more, a perfect appetizer until we can once again dive deeper into the world of London Below. The audiobook is a must-listen for Gaiman enthusiasts and a great introduction for newcomers to his work.

The Marquis de Carabass has only recently recovered from a relatively terminal case of death.
On his recovery he finds himself coatless and soon at the mercy of The Elephant (and Castle).
He takes a reasonably direct route through London Below to recover his precious garment - beware The Mushroom and the Shepherds of Shepherds’ Bush... I loved Neverwhere, it is one of my favourite Gaiman tales and this short addition is a delight - the Marquis was such a fabulous character, whom I always pictured as somewhat fringe in nature...and to get some more of his character was a joy!

An absolute joy!

This is such a wonderfully written book and offers closure after reading Neverwhere. I am delighted that the Marquis got his coat back! I was very invested in that part of the story from Neverwhere and I love when authors go back and close these literary doors. It does contain spoilers for Neverwhere however so I would consider reading that first before this.
As to Neil Gaiman’s narration; it’s wonderful, eloquent and full of the kind of enthusiasm that you only hear from the writer reading their own words. I hope that Mr Gaiman ventures further into London Below to write more stories.

Marvellous storytelling
