Summary

The greatest athletic performances spring from the mind, not the body. Elite athletes have known this for decades, and now science is learning why it's true. In his fascinating new book, How Bad Do You Want It?, coach Matt Fitzgerald examines more than a dozen pivotal races to discover the surprising ways elite athletes strengthen their mental toughness.

Fitzgerald puts you into the pulse-pounding action of more than a dozen epic races from running, cycling, triathlon, XTERRA, and rowing with thrilling race reports and revealing postrace interviews with the elites. Their own words reinforce what the research has found: Strong mental fitness lets us approach our true physical limits, giving us an edge over physically stronger competitors. Each chapter explores the how and why of an elite athlete's transformative moment, revealing powerful new psychobiological principles you can practice to flex your own mental fitness.

The new psychobiological model of endurance performance shows that the most important question in endurance sports is: How bad do you want it? Fitzgerald's fascinating book will forever change how you answer this question and show you how to master the psychology of mind over muscle. These lessons will help you push back your limits and uncover your full potential.

Love the insights in this book

Some tough reviewers out there! Yes the delivery is a bit monotone but it’s the author which I really appreciate, Yes it’s largely detailed stories of sportspeople unknown to me but I loved learning about them as real life examples, Yes it’s complex psychology that I’ve had to relisten to multiple times and every marathon training cycle to make sure I’ve gleaned the insights - but all well worth it. I’ve recommended this audiobook time & time again to other runners, and it’s been v helpful to me personally. Enjoy!

Methods through story's.

The book is an unreal lesson on mental toughness through the story's of others and their lives.
Bare with the first chapter, then get stuck into the awesomeness of the book!!

Became obsessed with this book!

This book is a must for any athlete (pros or casual runners/cyclists) who seeks to understand the psychology behind what they do and why they love it. Fascinating and compelling.

A powerful message

This book provides a powerful and enduring look into the mental side of endurance sports. Yes, it is largely long anecdotes leading to insightful conclusions on various aspects of sports psychology. Matt leans heavily on published research which lends authenticity to his conclusions. As an endurance athlete myself I found the final chapter “Is it worth it” the most compelling as in it he draws everything together in a convincing way. A great listen.

Engaging and motivating

Loved this booked and Matt has a gift for describing races; but it would have been better if read by a professional narrator. Nevertheless it is well worth the listen/read.

Good not great

Some interesting and inspiring stories form the sports field. The main idea is that psychology is as important as physiology.
However, as someone who strives to continuously improve physically, I found little in the book that can be practically applied in my training. Hoping that some inspiration from the book will resurface during a hard part of a race or competition.

Enjoyed it, good examples and focus points

I don't think authors should narrate their work unless they are natural entertainers. Varied tone, pitch, rhythm and laboring the important points would have brought the story a new lease of life.
