Summary

In June 1993, a group of young guerilla filmmakers spent four weeks making Horror Movie, a notorious, disturbing, art-house horror flick.

The weird part? Only three of the film’s scenes were ever released to the public, but Horror Movie has nevertheless grown a rabid fanbase. Three decades later, Hollywood is pushing for a big budget reboot.

The man who played 'The Thin Kid' is the only surviving cast member. He remembers all too well the secrets buried within the original screenplay, the bizarre events of the filming and the dangerous crossed lines on set that resulted in tragedy. As memories flood back in, the boundaries between reality and film, past and present start to blur. But he’s going to help remake the film, even if it means navigating a world of cynical producers, egomaniacal directors and surreal fan conventions – demons of the past be damned. But at what cost?

Horror Movie is an obsessive, psychologically chilling and suspenseful feat of storytelling genius that builds inexorably to an unforgettable, mind-bending conclusion.

Critic reviews

'Paul Tremblay's Horror Movie is a brilliant piece about the masks we know about and the masks we don't, the ones we're forced to wear for a lifetime because of our depression and the things we create to make sense of terrible things.' (Walter Chaw, author of A Walter Hill Film)
'Paul Tremblay is one of the most terrifying horror writers of his generation and his new chiller, Horror Movie, is a reason for excitement.' (Joe Hill, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Fireman)
'In the hands of Paul Tremblay the story of a lost movie becomes a reflection on fear, the monsters we all are, and an investigation of what is a ‘horror novel.’ It’s bold, fearless, a bit sad, and very, very scary.' (Mariana Enriquez, author of Our Share of Night and Things We Lost in the Fire)
'Horror Movie is not only a haunting, unsettling, and utterly absorbing novel – it is also a twisted manifesto for art and the parts of ourselves we shed in order to create it. It messed with my head and I loved every minute of it.' (Clémence Michallon, internationally bestselling author of The Quiet Tenant)

interesting spin on the horror genre

Using the making of a horror a film and Using script extracts gives this movie a fresh, interesting perspective. While occasionally predictable, the characters are likeable enough to keep your interest.

Nothing

I couldn't make it past the first half.
This got such good reviews. I took it on holiday with me but gave up on it. Too long winded and hard to follow.

Another let down

The narrative jumps from timeline to timeline and is very muddled. It is very slow and plodding throughout and difficult to really connect with any characters aside from the main protagonist. The ending rescues this from being a one star review but even that wasn’t enough to feel worth an audible credit. It’s beginning to feel like Tremblay is a one-hit wonder as everything since Head Full of Ghosts has been a disappointment.

Huge Disappointment.

This book is not going to be for everyone.

pros: I liked how the narration was split between timeliness. The male narrator was enjoyable.

Cons : So much hype for this book and it really isn't what you expect.
The strange and weird things that are expected are non existent.
The ending was so boring.

Such a shame as I pre ordered and this book was so highly anticipated.

Wanted to love this...

I love Paul Tremblay, he's a great modern horror writer and I so enjoyed his other stories (minus the cabin one...) so I wanted to love this, but sadly it just didn't deliver. Way below his usual standards, the story flips back and forth between narratives in a way that makes it drag. Confusing too was the constant flipping between past and present with the two timeframs mingling in an indistinct way. the story dragged and there was little character development. Listen to his other books, they're MUCH better.

Not the author for me

I don’t think Paul’s books are for me. I couldn’t stop listening but really didn’t enjoy it.
