About this listen

Despite political foes, professional jealousies, and the scandal which drove her into exile, Capt. Honor Harrington has been offered a chance to reclaim her career as an officer of the Royal Manticoran Navy. But there's a catch. She must assume command of a "squadron" of jury-rigged armed merchantmen with crew drawn from the dregs of her service and somehow stop the pirates who have taken advantage of the Havenite War to plunder the Star Kingdom's commerce.

A Note from Author David Weber
There's been some confusion—not to say, um, energetic debate, readers and fans being readers and fans—about the correct pronunciation of "Manticoran." The truth, alas, is that a stitch was dropped. An error occurred. A mistake was made… and it wasn't Audible's fault. It was mine. Before Audible recorded the very first Honor Harrington book, narrator Allyson Johnson and I not only corresponded by e-mail but actually spoke to one another by phone. She wanted to make absolutely certain she had the correct pronunciations for names, places, star nations, etc., and I tried to make certain all of her questions were answered. And so they were. Unfortunately, at some point in the process, I replied to one of her e-mails by telling her that "Man-ti-core-ahn" was pronounced "Man-tik-er-ahn." Exactly how this happened is more than I can say at this point, except to blushingly disclose that the original e-mail remains intact, confirming to all the world that it was, indeed, my fault. I can ascribe it only to a temporary mental hiccup on my part and crave your forgiveness. If, however, you must blame someone for the mix-up, that someone should be me and not Audible, who have done everything they could to get it right.

The best of the Harrington series

Loved it. And it is the absolute best in the series in my opinion.

Absolutely PLYING Brilliant

I must first say I liked the premise of Honor Harrington, and have waited till I had all 14 books to binge on.

I am Glad I did. having just finished book 6, only pausing to write "READ THIS BOOK" I'm starting book 7 NOW... LOL 😆 🤣

Great book - awful accents

I am a big fan of this cheesy space opera series and have read it many times.

The narrator is absolutely fine until she tries her range of random accents - the British is possibly the worst, but the German/French/Italian attempts are all bad enough to mar your enjoyment of the book.

this series is awesome!

it has tree cats... which are like Cats in space. you have to love that. I actually love how the characters keep growing in this series. its currently making me think on how crazy war truly is. every book has a desperate situation and each book just ups the ante.

Enjoyable, and more more of the same

Book 6 in the Honorverse is more of the same kind of thing we've come to expect from these books. Goes in a slightly different different direction, and with the odd twist here and there - but it's ultimately good and honourable people (and cats) being good and honourable, with some irredeemably villainous people being villainous.

The narrator provides another easy listen. No real complaints, but two comments:
- Her various UK accents do not, in my view, sound accurate. However, this is set a couple of thousand years in the future, so I'm willing to accept that if these accents even still exist, they might have changed a little.
- The narrator consistently pronounces "Sachsen" as if it is spelt "Sashen", rather than something closer to "Zaxon" or "Saxon" (it being, in real life, what we call Saxony in English).

My main question with all of the Honorverse books so far is this: why is it that, after 2000 years of expansion and development, computer technology seems to be no more advanced than it is now? Where are the AI cores? Where are the robots? Why are there no signs of even the most basic futuristic automation?

Good story but…

I read this book years ago, liked it, and thought to revisit it as an audiobook. However, I was disappointed with the performance mainly because it gave the main character a squeaky and monotonous voice! Why? The voice did not gel with the persona of HH at all! I was actually tempted to skip the bits whenever she squeaked. Spoilt the experience for me.
