Il y retrouve son frère, immigré depuis plusieurs années, qui occupe un poste important au sein de la plus grande triade chinoise, Hong Men. Gagnant aussitôt la confiance de son chef, Luk bâtit peu à peu son royaume.

Mais le triomphe est de courte durée : le 7 décembre 1941, huit heures après l'attaque surprise de Pearl Harbor, les Japonais attaquent Hong Kong. Quel camp choisir ? Car, en plein chaos politique, Luk mène une double vie dangereuse : chef viril et résistant contre l'étranger le jour, il partage ses nuits avec un officier de renseignement britannique dont il est amoureux. Cet amour est-il réciproque ? Ou Luk n'est-il qu'un simple pion sur l'échiquier politique et mafieux de Hong Kong ? Quand les Japonais capturent son amant, les camarades de Luk commencent à le soupçonner.
