Max Weston, 21, leaves for his first army posting in central Africa. What happens to him changes the lives of his family forever. At home, his parents struggle to cope. The overwhelming love Caroline has always felt for her only child is now matched by the intensity of Max's absence.

Gripping, sad yet optimistic
I thought this was a poignant story of a marriage and parenthood, both of which can be down as much as up. It moves between time and character but is easy to follow. Most of the voices are convincing. Overall I thought it was excellent.

Elizabeth Day’s characters come to life and share their tales.
I loved this story; how each character has a chance to tell their story from their perspective and then, the main story comes to life but going back and forth, recalling each person’s life and experiences. ‘Home Fires’ is a tale told from what I can only assume, is a more realistic perspective in history; harsh and cruel, but very, very human.
