About this listen
A fun romantic comedy about a woman down on her luck and a handsome, mysterious stranger.
"People like you don't fall in love with people like me."
Meet Holly Hughes, a moderately successful teen advice columnist living in a studio apartment on the Upper East Side with her boyfriend Stephen. She has it all, but at the ripe age of thirty-one, she wants more. She wants to be married, she wants a family, and she's going to have it all with Stephen.
At least, that's what she thought, until Stephen announces he's gay, and the domino effect of unfortunate events begins. She soon finds herself unemployed, single, and living in her sister's house on Long Island, working as her niece's babysitter for less than minimum wage. She's pretty certain she's destined to live in the Land of Mediocrity forever.
And then, her niece runs face-first into a tall, handsome man at the bookstore.
Holly Freakin' Hughes is an HFN title about acceptance, feeling good enough, and the reality that the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
NOTE: This book contains some strong language and sexual situations. Age discretion is advised.

Slow burn rom com
The narrators really made this book for me and the duet style was perfect; Marie Hawkins is so talented and it was easy to forget Esther, Holly and Anna were all the same narrator. Teddy Hamilton is the perfect Brandon and the chemistry between them worked really well.
I'm not usually a rom com fan but this was a great listen and I liked the humour. I did find myself frustrated with Holly a little as I couldn't quite figure her out. She was a little contradictory (for example the scene in the park just jarred with her drunken ramble about Ben and his daughter) and I did think she completely overreacted about Brandon; he never actually lied and it did seem unfair to compare that to what Stephen did. I was rooting for them though and was happily invested in them (although I kept waiting for Julia to reappear!)
If you are looking for a slow burn, low spice romance (its fade to black/closed door) then definitely give this a listen!
My interpretation of the star system;
3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again
4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series
5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read
