Summary
From the No. 1 bestselling writer, comes a terrifying serial killer thriller featuring King’s beloved character Holly Gibney from the Finders Keepers private detective agency.
Holly Gibney, one of Stephen King’s most compelling and ingeniously resourceful characters, returns in this thrilling novel to solve the gruesome truth behind multiple disappearances in a Midwestern town.
Stephen King’s Holly marks the triumphant return of beloved King character Holly Gibney. Fans have witnessed Holly’s gradual transformation from a shy (but also brave and ethical) recluse in Mr Mercedes to Bill Hodges’s partner in Finders Keepers to a full-fledged, smart, and occasionally tough private detective in The Outsider. In King’s new novel, Holly is on her own, and up against a pair of unimaginably depraved and brilliantly disguised adversaries.
When Penny Dahl calls the Finders Keepers detective agency hoping for help locating her missing daughter, Holly is reluctant to accept the case. Her partner, Pete, has Covid. Her (very complicated) mother has just died. And Holly is meant to be on leave. But something in Penny Dahl’s desperate voice makes it impossible for Holly to turn her down.
Mere blocks from where Bonnie Dahl disappeared live Professors Rodney and Emily Harris. They are the picture of bourgeois respectability: married octogenarians, devoted to each other, and semi-retired lifelong academics. But they are harbouring an unholy secret in the basement of their well-kept, book-lined home, one that may be related to Bonnie’s disappearance. And it will prove nearly impossible to discover what they are up to: they are savvy, they are patient, and they are ruthless.
Holly must summon all her formidable talents to outthink and outmanoeuvre the shockingly twisted professors in this chilling new masterwork from Stephen King.
‘I could never let Holly Gibney go. She was supposed to be a walk-on character in Mr Mercedes and she just kind of stole the book and stole my heart. Holly is all her.’ Stephen King
Critic reviews
"Not content with being the master of horror and fantasy, in recent years Stephen King has earned a place among America’s finest crime writers." (Sunday Express)
"Undeniably one of the greatest storytellers of the past century, Stephen King is a master at revealing the horrors that lurk beneath the surface of what looks like ordinary life." (Daily Mail)

Bring back Will Patton!
Understood that the whole book is from a female perspective but…simply can’t get used to listening to this female accent for the narrative…she does not even have the sound and cadence of Holly although I understand she played Holly in Mr Mercedes…I think I’m going to have to give up at Chapter 13 and go buy the book instead so I can process the story in my own voice…what a shame Will Patton was not used again for narration.

Narrator change is jarring
Will Paton has been the voice of Holly Gibney in the previous 5 installments of this brilliant series, but it's the first time I'd have to drop a star on a Stephen King audio book having listened to all available. The change in performer is hard to take, especially since there's no effort to keep any of the character's unique vocal habits from the previous book. Feels disconnected from the series because of this.

Another poor one from king
Another poor story from king. Such a good character, I loved the mr Mercedes books but this was poor. Very politically driven, king had obviously projected his opinions on covid and trump onto Holly and every chapter hammers this point home. Tough listening , I miss the old king

Political propaganda makes this unbearable.
King is obsessed with pushing his beliefs around covid & Trump - masks, vaccinations, Trump, masks, more masks, did he mention Holly is double vaccinated? Yes repeatedly. It’s a real shame as I love his work and his books are the only ones I look forward to & purchase on the day they’re released. I’ll try & listen again tomorrow but if wanted to have someone’s else’s political beliefs rammed down my throat I’d just go on Twitter/X.

soulless clunk
this cheap piece of big pharma propaganda, approved by the DNC, is just hard to swallow. anything on it is unbelievable. the dark and light parts in equal measure. it's like this guy Stephen king lives in a bubble far from everyday life, and the only window he opens in order to observe his fellow mortal beings and their affairs, is through the NYT.
on top of that, I think the guy is just scrabbling the main idea, and an army of editors and clippers, (AI? maybe) does the whole job. and we get a soulless, ready to eat, product, that actually doesn't feed at all.
as for the narrator, it's terrible. kindergarten delivery

Worth the wait
I’ve anticipated the release of this book for months, hungry for a dedicated Holly book. Contrary to these early reviews, I liked the narrator. I liked the story. It’s not quite Mr Mercedes series exciting but it’s in line with Holly’s new life. Would love another one.

Nope, not without Mr Patton
This went back after about ten chapters..... couldn't listen to anymore of the monotone narration. Will Patton nailed the narration in the last books; this was like listening to someone read a school essay.

There are other worlds than these
A brilliant depiction of dystopian Faucist paranoia, where "I'm happy to make your acquaintance" is replaced with "how many boosters and what brand did you have?", handshakes with elbow bumps, and faces with masks.
Easy to digest, pre-chewed world, where goodies voted Obama; baddies are anti-vaxx, Trump-touting, MAGA lunatics.
A divisive, polarising cry for help showing how these strange times can break even the Wordslinger himself.
Oh, and if you squint just the right way, you can spot a crime story happening in-between the wheezy coughs.

Narrator too fast
Even though I slowed it down I struggled with this narration. I nearly gave up a few times but carried on and overall I'm glad I did.

Always Nice to Spend Time With Holly Gibney
Although Will Patton didn’t narrate this book, I still really enjoyed the story & it has made me want to listen to the Mr. Mercedes Trilogy again.

5 Shining Stars
Stephen King writes great characters and Holly Gibney has long been one of my favourites. I was thrilled to hear she was getting her own book and pre-ordered ASAP, I was not disappointed.
Both story and narration were excellent, I was torn between wanting to finish the book to see what happened and sad that it would be over.
I don’t want to give away any of the storyline so I’ll leave it here, but I recommend this book and although it’s not necessary to have read any of the other books Holly features in, if you have a mind to, you could start at Mr Mercedes and go from there, I might just do it again myself.

The juxtaposition of good versus evil is unique.
I found myself filled with absolute revulsion at times in the story and then total admiration for Holly who seems to skip through holy terrors with determined dedication.

Another gift from Stephen King
I love Holly, I was so excited to see another book from the series! Love the characters, story, everything about it really. Parts where King put himself in the most. I look forward to everything Mr King writes.

Great story, excellent performance.
As much as I like Will Patton, I have always found his "Holly" slightly forced and off putting. This narrator is excellent. The story is vintage Stephen King, with a twisted plot, and great character development (particularly the bad guys).
