Christmastime in an isolated country house and, following a flaming row in the kitchen, there’s murder inside. When a much disliked visiting servant disappears without trace after playing Santa Claus, foul play is at once suspected - and foul play it proves to be. Only suspicion falls not on the staff but on the guests, all so unimpeachably respectable that the very thought of murder in connection with any of them seems almost heresy.

Story
The first audiobook which appeared in Georges Simenon's famous Maigret series, in a gripping new translation by David Bellos.Inevitably Maigret was a hostile presence in the Majestic. He constituted a kind of foreign body that the hotel's atmosphere could not assimilate. Not that he looked like a cartoon policeman. He didn't have a moustache and he didn't wear heavy boots. His clothes were well cut and made of fairly light worsted. He shaved every day and looked after his hands. But his frame was proletarian. He was a big, bony man.

Charles Paris is in clover. He has been contracted for three whole months to play brainless bobby Sergeant Clump, foil to the charismatic amateur sleuth, Stanislas Braid, in a TV series of that name. Recourse to the whiskey bottle is still needed, however, to get him through a day’s filming - one made all the more arduous by the pompous posturings of the show’s star, and the constant outraged interruptions of the ancient author whose detective novels are being adapted. Indeed, there is plenty of friction about.

In Hide My Eyes, Campion finds himself hunting down a serial killer. A spate of murders leaves him and his friend and colleague Inspector Luke, with only the baffling clues of a left-hand glove and a lizard-skin lettercase. However a chain of strange events leads them to an odd museum of curiosities hidden in a quiet London neighbourhood where there is more going on than meets the eye.

Ruined by appalling narration
Another classic ruined by Audible's choice of narrator. Charlie Luke has been reduced to a pastiche of a Cockney barrow boy and Campion has had a total personality removal.

Exciting Story Well Read
What made the experience of listening to Hide My Eyes the most enjoyable?
This is a pacey story - moving much faster than the other Campion books. Luke plays a key role and although I didn't like the voice this reader gave him the story was very gripping and enjoyable.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Campion - who else in one of these books?
What about David Thorpe’s performance did you like?
I freely admit that Philip Franks is my absolute favourite for reading these books but he never recorded this one. David Thorpe did very well and gave each character a different voice.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
That would give away the plot. There are several poignant moments when someone realises the truth in stages.

The best one yet
Margery Allingham is clearly under-rated. I've listened to a few of hers now, they're always gripping and with a good balance of the human touch. This was the best I've listened to yet. You know who the criminal is from the start, and yet the character explorations and twists and turns make it utterly gripping. Just don't listen to it as you're going to bed!

Unexpected
This is listed as a Albert Campion story, but he plays a very minor role. This I found disappointing, as part of the enjoyment of these stories is his quirky personality. For that reason I didn't enjoy this as much as other Margery Allingham books.

NOT REALLY A CAMPION BOOK
I waited so long for story, and Campions part in it to get going that I was disappointed before I even got halfway. By the time I realised Campion only had a very small input to this story I had failed to enjoy the story itself. It was not what I expected as it was sold as a Campion novel .... so I did not get what I wanted.

Very good, not great
Would you consider the audio edition of Hide My Eyes to be better than the print version?
Have not read the print edition.
What did you like best about this story?
Her characterizations are always excellent. People are vivid, well-rounded, unusual and individualistic.
Have you listened to any of David Thorpe’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
David Thorpe is fantastic. Although most people say that Frances Matthews reads Allingham better (and he is great), David Thorpe pushes the envelope and makes each character so individualistic. He has great enthusiasm and attention to detail in his reading. People don't like the high whine he puts into Campion's voice, but that is how Allingham describes Campion's voice in Black Dudley.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
I wouldn't make a film of it as, although it was good, it was kind of a pale shadow of Tiger In The Smoke.
Any additional comments?
Allingham can do no wrong.

This time we get into the mind and habits of s serial killer, pursued by a wider circle of interested parties. Excellent and very modern, and Charles Luke really shines. My only complaint is that Lugg and Amanda don't play a part.
