About this listen

Leon Alcantara is a real son of a witch.

The last in a proud line of witches, he’s come to test his small magic in the big city. Stealing enchanted artifacts pays the rent, but the competition is fierce. And handsome. And great at magic too.

But Maximilian Drake and his dark, brooding glances are the least of Leon’s problems. A chain of anomalies surges through the city, strange distortions in reality that threaten both Dos Lunas and its people.

Suspected by the arcane authorities, Leon is forced to work with his nemesis to clear his name. But Max is so secretive over his shrouded past. Can he even be trusted? Leon must decide before the anomalies destroy the city—and his entire life.

Not sure 🤔

"It's not you, it's me!" kind of book.
I've seen reviews labeling the book as a good beach read (fun, light and easy-to-read) and I agree with the description. So why is my rating so low? I just did not care. I didn't care for the characters, the story, the plot... for anything! The book didn't connect with me.
But is it another A Touch of Fever, the first book in the Arcane Hearts series by the same author? Where I didn't care either for the first book but read the rest of the series and loved it? We'll see.

Absolutely loved it!

First of all, John Solo absolutely smashed the narration in this for me. Their character voices are great and they even have distinct voices for side characters too. I especially loved their characterisation of Leon.

Storywise, Nazri as always, pulled it out of the bag. I loved the whole idea of Finders being a sort of grey area job that’s not illegal, working for the spider network. I loved the differences in the two main characters and especially their back stories. I honestly am so excited to see where this story goes next!

Good story, meh narration

A good series opener introducing two new and engaging characters with great worldbuilding, an intriguing plot and a snarky enemies to lovers romance. But the narration is so distracting it's hard to focus on the story. John Solo has a tendency to over-exaggerate and over-emphasise, especially in action scenes and sex scenes - he brings out nis "movie trailer announcer guy" voice and adds this weird tremor which I suppose is meant to convey tension, but actually just sounds like someone with an overactive vibrato.

After listening to Zachary Johnson in Arcane Hearts and Greg Boudreaux in Wild Hearts, it's a real let down. I'll be switching to print for the rest of this series and hoping Mr. Noor finds someone better to narrate his next one.
