Summary

Narrated by the visionary founding member, Hell's Angel provides a fascinating all-access pass to the secret world of the notorious Hell's Angels Motorcycle Club. Sonny Barger recounts the birth of the original Oakland Hell's Angels and the four turbulent decades that followed. Hell's Angel also chronicles the way the HAMC revolutionized the look of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle and built what has become a worldwide bike-riding fraternity, a beacon for freedom-seekers the world over.

Never simply a story about motorcycles, colorful characters, and high-speed thrills, Hell's Angel is the ultimate outlaw's tale of loyalty and betrayal, subcultures and brotherhood, and the real price of freedom.

A hard listen

Sonny Barger has an ego the size of the USA. But don't think this is a glamorous Sons of Anarchy type lifestyle. Barger is a complete egotistical moron, he is convinced it is his way or now way. The so called "code of honour" has nothing to do with honour. This is the story of a bunch of bikers, who should've been locked up and the key thrown away. They thought they were above the law, none were nice people. They were drug taking morons who enjoyed fighting, especially if they can "ratpack" the victim (like 5 HA's on one victim).
The expression "f**k em up" is used to often, its like they are trying so hard to be tough, when really they are nothing more than a bunch of criminal thugs, drinking, drugging, raping, fighting. They thrive on the image of fear.
Its a hard listen, fascinating to see how deluded these guys are. Sonny Barger was a jumped up Napoleon. Bragging, how he faced down Law Enforcement officials, they showed no respect for fellow human beings.
If you are expecting to like these guys, good luck.

The narration is ok, but trying to hard to be tough talking.

Mundane and self obsessed diatribe.

Would you try another book written by Sonny Barger or narrated by John Pruden?

No, definitely not. Not very entertaining, rather self indulgent book not really engaging and it drones on far too much. Wasted a good few hours listening to it, waiting for it to excite... And that didn't happen

What could Sonny Barger have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

More action and details

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of John Pruden?

Robert duvall

What character would you cut from Hell's Angel?

Not many to choose from

Bikers for the win

Hell's Angel by #SonnyBarger. Although I am a man who loves the inline motorcycle, I do like the V-twin #harleydavidson popularised by the Hells Angels. An intriguing book about the biker gangs culture, code & punishment around respecting the gang's colours. 📚5/5🌟#bookreview

A must for any true biker

An excellent book, from an amazing man. It gives the history of the Hells Angels like only Sonny himself could tell it. He doesn't just talk about the good times. He's also reflects on the bad times with a no bullshit approach. I have personally read it 3 times and highly recommend it to any true biker out there! I've read it 3 times and will probably read it another time in the near future

Like it or not the Hell's Angels are criminals

I actually had more respect for Sonny Barger and the Hell's Angels before reading this book. The book is merely comprised of first hand recollections of the trials, tribulations and growing pains of a criminal organization which I fully expected before buying this book. What I didn't expect was Mr. Barger playing the wrongly accused innocent victim stance on most of the legal actions taken against the club in a supposed unjust legal environment. However, I continued reading the book with an open mind until the recollection of the infamous Rolling Stones free concert at Altamont Speedway, California. Barger actually attempted to justify the stabbing murder of Meredith Hunter at the hands of Hell's Angels members by placing the blame on the band and the venue instead of the hands of those with the knives. I would have had more respect for the man if he would have fessed up to the wrongdoings instead of pushing the blame off on others. In a nutshell, were it not for an amazing streak of luck and legal technicalities, Sonny Barger should be behind bars for life instead of whining about how he had been so unfairly pursued by authorities. Disappointing.

it was okay

What did you love best about Hell's Angel?

Sonny seemed pretty friendly...

If you’ve listened to books by Sonny Barger before, how does this one compare?

No.

What about John Pruden’s performance did you like?

It was fine.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

somewhat

Any additional comments?

It sure seemed like a lot of the HAMC activities were glossed over. I did expect a lot more information, but I guess that might not be allowed. Sonny made them sound like they are pretty friendly.

Sorry, but I found it boring.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend this only to a friend who thought he was a bad ass biker dude. I found the stories boring and childish.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No

Gotta respect an outlaw...BUT

... to paraphrase John Wayne: “life is hard… It’s harder if you’re stupid.“ As a retired Green Beret, i can see the whole the-hell-with-it brotherhood thing, but as a long time practicing criminal lawyer, i can’t see the celebration of bad decisions, prison time and debauchery invariably ending up as lessons NOT learned. Nonetheless, it is these kind of renegades that I firmly believe are the first Bull work against government tyranny and social apathy. This book is not good writing…in fact, it is a story told with a certain degree of slope headed mendacity… But I think I have enough sense to sidle up to the Hells Angel side of the fence if the shit hits the fan. And in today’s age of kowtowing conformity, I’d rather be with Sonny Barger than with all the Sheeple on the West Coast...and elsewhere.

Outstanding Book!

First things first, MUCH LOVE & RESPECT to the Club and our “Chief”.
Sonny is the one who made the club what it is today. The “Chief” gives you an insight from his point of view. From the beginning as a young man to the Army and the journey to becoming the iconic figure he is today. Love him ,hate him, or whatever u may think about him or the club, nothing will ever change the fact Sonny Barger is and will always be a Legend. Happy Birthday Chief, much Love & Respect “AlwaysUs JustUs” Long Live the mighty Red & White. ~Known Associate 🔴⚪️

A little bit glorification

A little bit glorification, Sonny's own views of how everything went down. I think you should read it with a pinch of salt.

Narcissistic rant

I'm not sure what I expected from this book, maybe honesty. It started out pretty good and evolved into a self aggrandizing story of brawls and beat downs. That's a given in that environment. Like I say, not sure what I was looking for.
