Summary

Jasper’s only friend, Ethan, is dying. Jasper is a gremlin with enough power to level a city, but the magical energy he placed within Ethan to keep him alive is fading. Ethan’s only hope lies in the very artifact that nearly killed him in the first place: The Everflame.

The two join forces with Linna, a young pirate woman coming into her own powers, and Avril, the personification of fate itself. Unfortunately, they aren’t the only ones seeking the artifact. Hunted by their old friend Yon and his army of monsters, they set out to claim the Everflame.

Minutes to Madness is a lighthearted novel speckled with comedy while retaining the serious undertone of a race against time.

Really fun book

What a fun book this was! I will try to explain what I liked about without spoiling too much.

First off, this is not a grimdark tale of terrible torture and whatnot, but it is also not a sugary sweet high fantasy tale. It is basically a well written and thought out quest with a cast of friends and a bunch of action packed sequences, but also some heart in between. The characters are witty and their conversations are fun to hear. I really like the grouchy gremlin Jasper, who is a bit of a smartass (so is Ethan, actually). Linna is interesting too and the interaction between the three is both believable and easy on the ears. I genuinely like them. In a way this book reminded me a bit if the earlier Drizzt books by R.A. Salvatore, even though the content is different. But the same fun 'friends off to have adventures' vibe.

Reading the above, it may all sound a bit shallow, but that is not the case. The stakes are high, and there is some emotional tension as well. I am also impressed by the cool magic system and the effortless worldbuilding. Everything is explained in an unforced way, without giving away too much at once but also not so complex that you have to keep a notebook by your side to get it.

Lastly, the narration was great too. Pleasant reading voice and good differentiation between characters. Good comic timing as well. All in all, I had a lot of fun listening to this book. Perfect break from all the grim news in the real world. Hope it turns into a series!
