Summary

1990. Lenka Brett - a smart but unworldly young, Irish teacher - volunteers to deliver aid when the world learns of the horrifying plight of children in Romanian orphanages.

An English naval officer, Captain Simon Syrianus, volunteers to be her co-driver. Together, they join a convoy of humanitarian aid drivers known as the Rogues, the last hope for those in areas where official charities cannot enter.

Lenka falls in love, but when the Rogues become the target mercenaries, tragedy follows, and she discovers her lover is not who he appeared to be.

Heartbreak is good title for this complex story

Having read the book it was great that the audio version brought the characters to life pretty much as I had imagined them. Both narrators were great but I particularly loved Siobahn’s portrayal of Lenka and all the Irish children. Lenka was only a baby when the Lochran Trilogy ended so it’s great to get to know her as an adult and catch up with other characters from the earlier books especially Foxy, Estelle and Marisa.Lenka’s own story increases in complexity as we get to know her companions on the convoy who are all very colourful and the tension builds and builds as they risk their lives to get the aid through to Romania. As with all the earlier books by John Righten, you can’t wait to know what happens next….

good book

This is part one of a trilogy. This trilogy is the third segment of the wider Rogues trilogy. Does this make it a Rogues-verse? But don't worry, it's well written that one can easily jump on board. And even better, having jumped on board, enjoy the ride.

This review is of the Audio reading.

Firstly the story itself. Righten's writing is welcoming. Set in the early 1990s it focuses on Lenka delivering medical aid to war torn european areas such as Bosnia. Written with humour and menace. 7/10.

Scoring: 0 bad; 1-3 poor; 4-6 average; 7-9 good; 10 excellent

Gripping read

A gripping read from start to finish.
The characters are one of the main attractions and the author has excelled in describing their personalities and flaws.
The story gradually builds up to an intriguing end of this first chapter, with humour and an attention to detail always present.
I will definitely be buying the next chapter.
