Another excellent Rendell

Good story, more of a slow burner than some Rendell's, on the theme of domestic violence. Beautifully and sensitively narrated.

Entertaining and enjoyable

I enjoyed this book. The narrator brought out humour in the characters, and used an amazing range of accents. The story covers the difficult subject of domestic violence. However, the author seemed unaware of the issues around safeguarding children and how this would be dealt with in real life. I also picked up a level of snobbery and stereotyping in how the different characters were depicted, which I had not noticed when reading Wexford books previously. Although amusing at times, this did become annoying.
Also , as others have said, the chapter divisions in the recording bear no relation to the actual chapters of the story

Really enjoyed

Really enjoyed this audio book - I am a Ruth Rendell fan - kept me guessing although I don't consciously want to know until the very end.

Narrator is excellent.

prescient

loved the complexities of this novel the subject matter must have been quite new when Ruth wrote it. I am sure it would have been a help to the women's refuge cause.

Dodgy Sussex accent

My first Wexford story. My biggest problem was with the inspector's supposed Sussex accent, which was miles away from Midhurst. I think I'd have preferred a bit more character development and a less busy plot but it was an OK for a day's listen.

Excellent

Another excellent Ruth Rendell novel superbly read. A difficult topic - domestic abuse - but skilfully handled as ever.
