Another excellent Rendell

Good story, more of a slow burner than some Rendell's, on the theme of domestic violence. Beautifully and sensitively narrated.

Entertaining and enjoyable

I enjoyed this book. The narrator brought out humour in the characters, and used an amazing range of accents. The story covers the difficult subject of domestic violence. However, the author seemed unaware of the issues around safeguarding children and how this would be dealt with in real life. I also picked up a level of snobbery and stereotyping in how the different characters were depicted, which I had not noticed when reading Wexford books previously. Although amusing at times, this did become annoying.
Also , as others have said, the chapter divisions in the recording bear no relation to the actual chapters of the story

Really enjoyed

Really enjoyed this audio book - I am a Ruth Rendell fan - kept me guessing although I don't consciously want to know until the very end.

Narrator is excellent.

Great story; bad audio presentation

Another reviewer has already stated how frustrating the various glitches are - like a faulty CD in parts and a chapter listing that is way off kilter. Nigel Antony's narration is superb (except sometimes his 'she' sounds very much like 'he') and his voices are very believable. A great story - stories! - although I thought the opening storyline of the abducted girls Lizzie and Rachel to be a tad far-fetched. Difficult to pinpoint the many characters on the estate, I was confused a lot of the time but as these were fairly 'minor' characters and not directly related to the main plot I didn't worry too much. It kept me enthralled anyway.

Kept me interested

I really enjoyed this. New to Ruth Rendall, I wasn't sure if I'd like it, but there were enough twists and turns to keep me engaged. Great performance too!
