The three main characters in the novel are swept up in the violence during these turbulent years. One is a young boy from a poor village who is employed at a university lecturer's house. The other is a young middle-class woman, Olanna, who has to confront the reality of the massacre of her relatives. And the third is a white man, a writer who lives in Nigeria for no clear reason, and who falls in love with Olanna's twin sister, a remote and enigmatic character.
As these people's lives intersect, they have to question their own responses to the unfolding political events. This extraordinary novel is about Africa in a wider sense: about moral responsibility, about the end of colonialism, about ethnic allegiances, about class and race; and about the ways in which love can complicate all of these things.

Perspicacious rare glimpse into history's horror
If you could sum up Half of a Yellow Sun in three words, what would they be?
Excellent story, easy to follow and get involved in. A view of the Biafran war from the point of view of Biafran's.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Half of a Yellow Sun?
The news that the Biafran leader was going abroad for talks: beginning of the end.

Excellent
Narrator does a phenomenal job with accents and pronunciations - looking at the names of characters and places online afterwards demonstrates that my uninformed attempt to read them (had I not listened to the audio version) would have been all wrong.

Insightful story about a war I never knew much about
Beautifully narrated with such expressionate accents describing the journey of two sisters that transported me to dark times and hardship in Africa. I encountered strong fearless women and listened to their horrific stories of war. An eye opening account of a piece of history I never knew much about.

Gripping, beautifully written and so moving.
I was fully immersed in the lives of these brave Biafrans, touched by the many experiences during the war. The narration was perfect and I could listen to it all over again. I look forward to reading more of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's writing.

Wonderful Book - wonderful writer

The description of peoples lives through such violent and turbulent times. She never lets go of the ordinary details, making it very real.

Enjoyed it immensely
Where does Half of a Yellow Sun rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Second only to Kate Winslet's narration of Matilda which had me laughing all the way.
What did you like best about this story?
Having read another book (a long time ago) about the Nigerian civil war, I thoroughly enjoyed this version as I thought it didn't have as much gory details as the other. I liked the story before the war broke out, but I thought the after would have been better if Kayinene was found.

Every single one.

Fantastic book, fantastic narrator
I bought this book on Audible as it was the January choice of a book club I attend. This isn't the sort of book I'd choose and the historical theme would have put me off if I'd seen it in a bookshop. However, I can't recommend it enough - the narrator is fantastic, and really brings a warmth and charm to the story, which is very much a 'human' story in amongst a tale of Nigeria & Biafra's war in the 1960's.
