1787. På slavefregatten Haabet bryder et blodigt oprør ud blandt de sorte i lastrummet. Under daek er to kvinder i de desperate menneskers vold: kaptajnens og den nygifte skibslaeges unge hustruer. Inden slaveoprøret brutalt slås ned, har det aendret en raekke menneskeskaebner for altid.
"Haabet" er en grum beretning fra en tid da Danmark skabte ny velstand på slavernes arbejde i de vestindiske sukkerplantager. Et kapitel i rigets historie som i mange år blev fejet ind under gulvtaeppet, er her blevet til en fortaelling om kynisk udnyttelse og ufattelig ondskab, men også om kaerlighed og overlevelse under umulige vilkår.
