Summary

This is the first installment in a deliciously catty and engrossing teen series that has been a hit around the world.

"Welcome to New York City's Upper East Side, where my friends and I live and go to school and play and sleep, sometimes with each other. We're smart, we've inherited classic good looks, and we know how to party. It's a luxe life, but someone's got to live it."

The Gossip Girl series is the ultimate in glamour and cool - set in New York's glamorous Upper East Side, the narrative follows the thrills and spills (with Jimmy Choo shoes and shopping at Barneys mixed in along the way) of its richest and most beautiful teenage residents. Gossip Girl is the ultimate in sophistication, scandal and luxury.

Critic reviews

"A nasty, guilty pleasure. The book has the effect of gossip itself once you enter it's hard to extract yourself; teens will devour this whole." ( Publishers Weekly)

"A fast, easy reading that's both funny and sad...high appeal for older teens." (School Library Journal)

Nice bit of fluff

It's the equivalent of one tv episode, rather than a season. This sets the scene nicely for the characters we'll follow. But not that much actually happened here. Can't believe it's an actual book. should have been the opening chapters of something more substantial. I hope the rest of the books flesh things out more, narrative-wise.

unlikely

I read this because I loved the fabulously slick Netflix series. In contrast this is mostly crass and rather a caricature than a reality. Having said that, however, it is fairly well read. Also the story line is very strong. so it will hold your attention if you are not completely put off by its unreality and its crudity. I thought I would listen to the whole series. The first few minutes cured me of that but because of the strength of the story telling I did enjoy it at least some of the time.

Really not a good book

After watching the series I thought I'd read the books. However, this book is quite bad. Not a patch on the series. And I shan't be bothering with the rest of the books.

5 Words: Rich kids playing stupid games.

So yeah, that kinda sums it all up.

Gossip Girl is light and fluffy, and kind of a nothing-story. I didn't care for the characters, so I didn't care what happened to them. And nothing really did happen.

The narrator was pretty good, ensuring that each character had a distinct voice. But DAMN, Jenny set my teeth on edge.

I won't read on. While the show is a guilty pleasure for a rainy day, the book certainly is not.
