Summary

'Men see women in two separate categories. There are the women they sleep with, and the women they fall in love with. And they will treat you differently based on that.'

From the day they first meet as teenagers, Fern and Jessica are best friends. Despite their differences, they are there for each other throughout everything, navigating the difficulties of growing up and fitting in. That is until Jessica crosses a line that Fern can't forgive.

But now, more than 10 years later, Jessica has unexpectedly reappeared in Fern's life.

A lot has changed for them both—but can their relationship be different now they are older? Is it possible for either of them to rewrite the role that they have been cast in? Or will their shared history ultimately be doomed to repeat itself again?

Set between the present day and the past, Girl Friends is a blisteringly funny and devastating novel: both a joyful celebration of female friendship and a razor-sharp look at the damage we can all cause to those we claim to love the most.

So so good

I really can’t speak highly enough about this book. I loved the way it weaved in elements that most, if not all women and non-binary people will relate to. Such a powerful read and just so well written!

Hard to read but seriously worth it.

Probably because I'm in my 70s, I found the first part hard to read. I couldn't believe girls at university could be so stupidly careless with their safety.

But slowly I started getting the point of the book.

Girfriends are often the most important group of people in a woman's life. They are the ones who will keep you safe, not the Nice Young Man who wants to walk you home. No.

The Lichtenstein postcard saying 'My best friend just ran off with my Boyfriend. I'm going to miss her so much' - suddenly says it all. In a jokey way. But when you know the truth, it's not a joke. Poor best friend. Read this book, especially if you are young enough to stop living a story like this! And stop envying Pretty Girls. It's not always fun being that pretty!

This book is soul healing!

Can’t put into words how much I loved this book. It is such a beautiful, complex story about female friendship told with such honesty and tenderness. If you’re a woman who grew up in the noughties you must read this! Countless times I felt like my own teen years were literally being relayed, the details are uncanny and Holly Bourne paints a picture of the culture and the ways it harmed women with such skill and wisdom. It was honestly so cathartic to hear this story being told, I wept!

Thought provoking - adult female friendships

Enjoyed this book overall!

I chose this as I liked the narration style. The voice over was pleasent to listen to through out and I liked the change of tone and voice for individual characters keeping this fresh and stopping me from zoning out.

It wasn't a 'I can't stop listening to this I'm obsessed' type read but it was good through out and spoke some truths about female friendships and caused a little self reflection.

Overall I would recommend especially for women around their late 20s - 40s who have ever lost a friend they once were really close to, or are currently going through a friendship break up (something not spoken about enough but can be truly painful) It might give you a little insight to both perspectives!

Very relatable

As someone who went to university in the early noughties, I found this book frighteningly familiar. Some parts were tough to read but the final chapter was beautiful and a real eye opener for many millennials I’m sure.
Beautifully written and a real look at female friendship.

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!

A heartfelt exploration of female friendship, feminism and mental health. A must read!

I am a huge Holly Bourne fan, of her adult and teen books, and this may just be my favourite book of hers to date.

Absolutely amazing

This book is utterly fabulous. I was well read and the voice was really easy to get along with but the story I have no words to describe how amazing I found it. I related to it a lot throughout and think this is a must read for any women who has ever felt not good enough in one way or another. My new favourite book.

Transported me back in time

You will find yourself relating to either Jess or Fern. If you relate to Jess you will feel the guilt of your teenage years ricochet back to you. You might also relate to Fern and the pain of not ever feeling quite good enough. Whoever you relate to, by the end you will realise that we are all working things through no matter how our masks appear on the outside. I have thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself in this read. Holly Bourne is able to portray the bare bones of human thoughts and emotions. Very powerful words as ever from this amazing, much needed modern day wordsmith.
