About this listen

The year is 1980. On a former French Plantation east of Chanthaburi, a very exclusive gathering brings together five extraordinary women. Stories were their business, and Gilda was at the top of the heap. There wasn’t a war she hadn’t reported, a scandal she hadn’t uncovered or a bestseller list she hadn’t topped.

The Whisky & Ink Ladies Drinking Society numbered only five at any one time, no boys allowed. Its meetings took place every two years. And Claude, daughter of the late Ava Wood, wants in. If things go right, she’ll be initiated into WILDS at the end of the visit.

An original, gripping story, delivered with style and emotion

This was a fantastic listen. Such a unique premise and setting, the story and narration combined to play out in my mind's eye. I loved the idea of a group of old female friends meeting up to regale each other with gruesome tales, such as the one shared by Gilda here, and the narrator did an excellent job of lending her voice to both Gilda's story and Claude's wider story, guided expertly by the author's structure. At times the prose caused me to catch my breath, such as when Claude is visited by the creepy guest, and the revelation at the end. Foster is fantastic at creating wonderful imagery with so little fuss, and the basis for his stories are as fresh as a gust of winter air. Or a tropical storm in the jungles of Thailand. I loved it.
