About this listen
Raven is a deeply disturbed teenager, who, after witnessing the death of his mother, is placed in foster care. The Russells do their best to earn his trust, but only little Ella manages to get through to him. Meanwhile, at school, bullies are making his life a living hell. An unexpected companion comes in the form of Lotte, a classmate bored by her "ordinary" friends. Together, they track down Raven's mum's killer, with the goal of exposing him to the police. But their carefully crafted plan goes dangerously wrong, and suddenly nothing is as it seems. Everything is falling apart and, ultimately, there is only one, final way out.

A delight to rediscover
Sixteen years ago, I read From Where I Stand as a teenager, engrossed in the story from beginning to end. Now, Alex Wingfield has brought Tabitha Suzuma's writing to an audio book and at more than twice the age I was back then, I can swear to at least as much enjoyment in revisiting Raven and his story in this format. Suzuma's quality of writing is well-established from all her books; she is chef-like in her precision with the ingredients of character building, plot development and scene setting, artistically combining these into a storytelling style with palpable realism, exquisite intuition and deep emotional resonance. Wingfield rises to the challenge of giving voice to Suzuma's words and he does so with passion and professionalism, clearly having enjoyed the book and engaged with the characters. What more could someone who loves the original written text ask for in an audiobook rendition?
As a time-poor adult whose current reading habits would shamefully disappoint my former teenage self, I am delighted to have revisited From Where I Stand in this way. It affirms that Tabitha Suzuma's Young Adult fiction books appeal far beyond their genre labels and I look forward to her other titles being introduced to the world of audiobooks.
