About this listen

Journalist Owen Bennet Jones and Brazilian songwriter Caetano Veloso on this edition of Fresh Air. Owen Bennet Jones is the author of the new book, Pakistan: Eye of the Storm. In the book he examines the turbulent 55-year history of the country. He'll discuss the country's history and its current relationship with the United States. Jones is based in England. Caetano Veloso is a national icon in his country. Along with Joaeo Gilberto (who created the bossa nova movement), Veloso created the provocative Tropicalismo movement which combined the richness of Brazil's musical past with '60s rock 'n' roll, surrealism, and dada - in reaction to the military junta in 1964. Veloso and Gilberto were jailed and exiled for their efforts. Veloso's memoir Tropical Truth a story of music & revolution in Brazil is now translated and published in the U.S. (Broadcast Date: December 10, 2002)(P) and ©2002 WHYY-FM
