Summary

Charged with drama and beauty, this memorable collection by a master storyteller weaves a magical world of possibility and power from female myths of physical renewal, creation and change. It is an extraordinary immersion into the bodies and voices, mindscapes and landscapes, of the shapeshifting women of our native folklore.

Drawing on myth and fairy tales found across Europe from Croatia to Sweden, Ireland to Russia, Sharon Blackie brings to life women's remarkable ability to transform themselves in the face of seemingly impossible circumstances. These stories are about coming to terms with our animal natures, exploring the ways in which we might renegotiate our fractured relationship with the natural world and uncovering the wildness and wilderness within.

Critic reviews

"A deeply evocative and haunting collection... Part rally cry, part warning, part manifesto and all parts enchanting, Sharon Blackie's Foxfire, Wolfskin is a deeply evocative and haunting collection. I want to press this powerful book into the hands of everyone I know and say listen." (Holly Ringland, author of The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart)

Brilliant retellings

I love that the respect for women has been reinserted in these folk tales, something that is sadly lacking in folk stories at large. Highly recommend!

Haunting and inspiring

I loved this listen. Just the right balance of regional accents and well paced reading to set off an evocative collection of stories. One I will listen to again and again

All women perk your ears!

Deeply researched, ingeniously reimagined, beautifully told tales of women becoming themselves; for themselves, and re-membering their lineage and relationship with Gaia herself. All the realms of natural life and beyond is knitted into the structure, the stories, and in the details, each story style unique! The narrators too are fabulous! How I appreciate the different accents, The Russian Baba Yaga story notwithstanding. Chuckled with some embarrassment through that one - spot on spiritual half-assing called out lovingly. Time to go all in, for all of us.

Thank you Dr.Sharon. I’m in the midst of If Women Rose Rooted too - enthralled - reading myself to more authenticity & belonging. Deelpy appreciated.

Loved these stories ❤

Although I've always loved tales like this and have heard many from grandma to me now being 38, these I thoroughly enjoyed for their difference not just by words but opinions too, love anything that tells of free woman and empowerment for them as we have shunned and silenced quite enough, why should not now shout and display ourselves for all we are worth. Very good narrative, easy to understand and follow, not too long but just right for an enjoyable collection.

Skin Deep

Dr Blackie casts her magic of prose, poetry and re-imaginging and sets free in our imagination how the world of there and here could be. Laugh, cry and rejoice with her in the way stories can be relevant today as we search for meaning, and ways to respect nature , our own nature and be natural.
Narrated with authentic voices so that the stories emerge with wit and a twist.

Depressing

Great myths retold in such a miserable way. The Baba Yaga especially, and Snow Queen were so depressing, nothing like the positive and great Clarissa Pinkola Estes yarns, told with helpful lessons to learn. Nothing profound or soulful sadly. I shall have to listen to all my C.P.Estes stories again instead.
