Summary

Part of BBC Two's Book Club Between the Covers.

Two sisters on trial for murder. They accuse each other.

Who do you believe?

'911 what's your emergency?'

'My dad's dead. My sister Sofia killed him. She's still in the house. Please send help.'

'My dad's dead. My sister Alexandra killed him. She's still in the house. Please send help.'

Mr Cavanagh’s usual brilliance.

I spent the whole of lockdown eagerly awaiting this book and it so happened on the day of its release I had a long commute to work. Honestly, I would’ve happily sat on the M6 all day and listened to this book. Steve Cavanagh is one of my favourite authors and this book didn’t disappoint. This is a who dunnit with the volume set to loud. I changed my mind several times. It’s great to have Eddie Flynn back and I look forward to more books with the new characters. Well done Steve and great narration. FIVE STARS⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Another masterpiece

Go Eddie! This author just keeps getting better! The characters are so interesting and the storylines so unique! I just love the way Eddie has a little jaunt back to his dodgy past every now again!
Can’t wait for the next one.

Modern New York noir

Hugely obvious twist but well-plotted legal thriller.
It’s almost as if you’re expected to anticipate the twist and that the real challenge is to work out how the evidence fits together.
He knows you know so sit back and enjoy the ride.
The courtroom exchanges are brilliant and there are beautifully grotesque portraits throughout.
All very cocky and NY, and a great listen. Great cast put in place fo the next instalment.

Very Dissapointing

I'd looked forward to this book because the earlier ones were excellent.
This one seemed more aimed at sharing the author's views on politics and feminism than entertaining the reader. Realism was never his/her strong point but the plots were superb. In this one ,all connection to the real world was abandoned but the plot was weak and predictable.
I kept thinking it'd get interesting towards the end, but it didn't .

If suspense is your thing, you can't go wrong.

Inhaled it! Some of the expressions when it came to the 2 suspects could have been better but still, excellent read. Simple accessible language, definitely sits within its genre and keeps you guessing.

6* book

I’ve loved this series. Some I’ve read and others I’ve listened to. This one was excellent. Steve Cavanagh, Adam Sims and Eddie Flynn the perfect trio.

So well written and narrated. Please let there be another book.

Kept me guessing to the end

A courtroom thriller, where two sisters are accused, but which of them did it?

The emergency services receive two telephone calls, moments apart. One from Alexandra saying her sister has murdered her father, the other from Sofia saying she has just found her father, who has been murdered by her sister. But who is telling the truth? The police arrest them both, and it is up to the defence lawyers to work it out.

The main characters are the defence lawyers, each sister employing their own lawyer, and a sinister character referred to as “She”, who is the murderer, but whose identity remains undisclosed until ...

This thriller certainly kept me guessing right up to the end. I listened to this as an audio book and it was well narrated and the plot was easy to follow despite my picking it up and putting it down with days intervening imbetween.

3*s from me as this was good entertainment, but I never got very involved with the characters. For me it would have been better in book format (rather than audio) , as there were times when I wanted to flick back to check something. However I enjoyed it and recommend it to lovers of courtroom thrillers.

It was not until I had finished this thriller, that I realised it was the 5th book in a series, but the first book I have read by this author. Perhaps I should have started earlier in the series.

Corny and comic strip like dialogue

The narration was corny and like a cheesy American cops drama. The story had some good crime factors within the story and a good set of twists at the end but it felt very amateurish and I struggled to get to the end.

Steve Cavanagh as a writer

Just when I thought that nothing can top off his book “13”. I happened to hear this one

This audio version of the book is equivalent to a page turner riddled with suspense with a gripping plot, complex characters, and a surprising twist that will leave you gasping. The author's writing style is engaging, and the psychological elements add depth and intrigue to the story.

No one sees the End coming.. keep up the great work. Steve Cavanagh

Engaging

I couldn’t put it down. The plot is somewhat familiar, but really engaging. The suspense is great.
