Questo romanzo è la prosecuzione de "Il mio cadavere". Anche se i personaggi sono in parte gli stessi del precedente volume, il tono del romanzo ha perso quanto di "noir" aveva il primo, e insiste invece sulle trame e gli intrecci che la Giustizia Divina percorre per rendere ad ognuno ciò che gli è dovuto in termine di premi e punizioni.
E il Mastriani è un narratore molto presente, che commenta gli eventi e coglie ogni occasione per descrivere ambienti e storia dei luoghi narrati (in questo caso la Francia delle prime decadi dell'800). Cornice musicale: Chopin op.9.
