About this listen

Having enjoyed robust health throughout her career, Miss Read, the village schoolmistress at Fairacre, is looking forward to an energetic retirement in a few years' time. But, to her dismay, she is suddenly taken ill. She has no wish to give up her post yet, but memories of her former colleague collapsing in front of the schoolchildren haunt her. Is it time to say farewell to Fairacre?©1994 Mrs D J Saint (P)2014 Audible, Inc. Contemporary Genre Fiction

One of my favorite writers, something to enjoy on a hot day of past memories of school and the country side.

As usual, witty realist Miss Read provides another hug in book form. Meaningful yet entertaining, I’ve loved all the Fairacre books. I’m really very sad that I’m near the end of the series!

One thing that is bugging me though, is Joseph Coggs, Ernest etc. They seem to have been at junior school for an impossibly long time! They must be in their mid-30s by now! Although I am very pleased, they’re lovely characters.

Sian Phillips is a first class narrator for this story, I wish she’d done some of the other previous Fairacre books.

Beautiful as ever! A hug in book form

There are other good readers, but none better.
I really enjoyed this and I'm off to get the next in the series!

Sian Phillips is the best Miss Read.

the first Fairacre novels are definitely the most engaging, but this penultimate one is also very good. Good to focus more on Miss Read again after several middle novels that featured other characters more heavily.

good penultimate novel to the final Fairacre book
