Summary

The second novel from the Costa Prize shortlisted author of Big Girl, Small Town.

It is the summer of 1994. In a small town on the Irish border, Maeve and her two friends have just secured summer jobs in the local shirt factory. They plan to make as much money as they can while waiting for their A Level results before getting out of town and away to the UK.

As the summer progresses and the marching season begins, tensions in the factory start to rise between the Catholic and Protestant workforce and events escalate putting Maeve's chance of escape in jeopardy.

This needs more stars!

This book was truly joyous. It was brilliant to have such a well narrated book, set in my own country, with girls of a similar age to me (back then, and I’d love to know where they are now that we’re in our 40s!), using familiar language, but living in the depths of the division that thankfully, as a ‘culchie’, I managed to skirt around. It was funny and moving, evocative yet bonkers, and left me wanting more and more. It beautifully addresses how friendships at that stage in life are so tenuous but also all encompassing, as you move into adulthood. And reminds you that (as with this book), you don’t always appreciate what you have until it’s gone.

Just brilliant

Loved this beautifully narrated story. Insightful and sad on the one hand and laugh out loud on the other. Brought back memories of growing up in Northern Ireland.

Great story

Great story, excellent narration which really made the book more enjoyable. It was eye opening to learn what it was like in Northern Ireland during the troubles and how people coped with humour and the importance of friendships. I thoroughly recommend this listen

Amazing book

I loved this book and didn’t want it to end!
The characters were so believable and 3 dimensional, the story was touching but full of hope despite the sometimes rather dark setting.

Brilliant! The narrator really made it!

5 stars all round. The characters really came to life with the fantastic narration. Some very funny one-liners, but also real pathos. Would definitely recommend.

Hilarious

The storyline, at times, seems to be stumbling along at a snails pace with constant deviations from the narrative to tell past tales which seem rather indulgent and unnecessary(minor criticism which I wanted to get out of the way). However the storyline and the protagonists do capture the imagination and the narration is some of the best I have heard. The range of characters and subtlety that the narrator displays in differentiating between them is perfect, in particular she captures the subtle difference between how the two religions in NI talk. This book is laugh out loud funny at times and it never takes itself too seriously, which is refreshing in an era of pretentious nonsense. I bought this as a fan of big girl small town and although there is no one quite as compelling as Majella O'Neill in the book it is thoroughly enjoyable and MG fans will not be disappointed.

I loved it hey!

Probably one of my quickest reads/listens. It was funny, sad, informative and genuinely took me right back to my time living in Norn Iron. The Narrator was nothing short of Brilliant. I do hope there is a Part 2. I miss Maeve, Caroline and Aoife already.
