İmam Gazali, bu eserinde, "Ey oğul" diyerek seslendiği öğrencisinin arzusunu yerine getirip, cevaplanabilecek bütün sorulara cevaplar vermeye çalışmıştır. İmam Gazalinin, o gün öğrencisine yazmış olduğu bu eser, bugün bile hala güncelliğini ve önemini korumaktadır.
