Summary

Two teens meet and bond when they are forced to visit their respective parents in neighboring apartments every other weekend. A sparkling, nuanced, and emotional listen for fans of Rainbow Rowell, Morgan Matson, and Julie Buxbaum.

Heartbreak brought them together...will love tear them apart?

Adam's life used to be awesome. Straight As, close friends, and a perfect home life. Then his oldest brother died. Now his mom cries constantly, he and his middle brother can't talk without fighting, and the father he always admired moved out when they needed him most.

Aspiring director Jolene's life is nothing like the movies she loves - not the happy ones anyway. With her divorced parents at each other's throats and using her as a pawn, no amount of mental reediting will give her the love she’s starving for.

Forced to spend every other weekend in the same apartment building, the boy who thinks forgiveness makes him weak and the girl who thinks love is for fools begin an unlikely friendship. The weekends he dreaded and she endured quickly become the best part of their lives. Have Jolene and Adam found something real? Or is their connection doomed from the start?

They’ll find out...every other weekend.

Such an amazing story!! Absolutely LOVED it!

I think one of the reasons I loved the book so much was because I could relate so much to the situation of the characters and it made me feel less lonely. There were some bits that made me cry that usually wouldn’t have but the performances made me. It was so perfectly worded that I felt like I wasn’t in my room anymore and I was In the book. It really helped me escape. And that’s why I absolutely LOVED it!!

Predictable, male narrator was awful

Maybe I just couldn't get passed the narrator for Adam and this made me dislike the book more than I would have if I had read the hard copy myself. He constantly sounded like he was narrating a true crime documentary, although he was decent enough at dialogue. I had to increase the speed to get through the book faster and to make his narration more tolerable.

slow and very detailed

Very slow pace with intense in depth descriptions of feelings and emotions. Interesting view of teenage love and family grief. Some might find it a bit gushy.

A sweet entertaining story!

The story was a very good one. For those interested in ya genre, this ya romance is very sweet and interesting. The plot is a simple one but it is kind of soothing to listen to. Thank you very much!

I think I’ve found a new favourite author

I stumbled across this book on the featured page on the app thinking I’d give it a try and I’m so glad I did. It is a story exploring the genuine and vulnerable journey of meeting and falling in love with someone, especially at a young age and dealing with all the complications that can come with that. It explores their interpersonal relationships and the effect this has on the web of characters and how they navigate some of the heavy scenarios life throws at us. I would caution a trigger warning for domestic violence, sexual assault, neglect and death. It is not a dark or particularly heavy book but it does feature these themes within the characters stories. However I want to draw appreciation to how the author brings awareness to these issues in a thoughtful and tactful manner without using it purely for “shock factor”. These would often be subjects that could easily switch me off a book due to the sensitive and triggering manner of them but the author addresses them in a way that allowed me to engage and journey through them with the characters. The narration was also fantastic from both voice actors, really immersing you in the story the whole way through. This is quite a long listen in total but I’m so glad it was because I couldn’t stop listening and found myself doing so at every chance I got. Thank you for bringing me further into the wonders of fiction and I am very excited to explore all your other titles as soon as I can.

Loved characters but a bit of a long wind

Really enjoyed the characters that’s why I continued til the end felt it was very long winded for the story though

Bad narration

I don't know about the story but the narrator's voice made me stop listening. The voice just has this "can't be asked" attitude where there's no life. Sounds boring and lazy. I hoped it would get better so I kept listening but it just got worse with the female voice. At least the male voice was lazy and boring, but the female voice just sounded like a text-to-speech and robotic. It even had an echo-ish effect. I waited again hoping it got better but it didn't and I just stopped listening after that.

Different than I thought

The conflict was different than I originally thought it would be, which I am actually glad about. I mostly liked the characters but sometimes they were both so annoying and you wanted them to make different and better choices. I guess also they're young so you can sort of forgive then for thinking the world revolves around them. But in the end I did like it

Captivating and Emotional

Fans of complex characters will find an auditory treat in this beautiful story! Adam and Jolene’s contrasting situations and compelling feelings are artfully described in alternating chapters. The drama and emotions depicted are real, not the typical frustrating teenage manufactured spats. Each character is expressively deep and you will be unable to put this one down (or push pause).

Emotional brilliance

Wow. It’s been a long time since I felt so deeply for characters in a book and hoping all of them would get a happier ending (which they did). Really loved this book and how real some of the issues young people face are highlighted. If you enjoy a sweet love story then this is a book that’s a little more real than fantasy and totally worth the read/listen.

Amazing story.

The male narrator almost DNFd this for me, but I decided to come back to it because I was already invested in the characters and their stories. If you speed him up it's not so bad.

Jolene was a difficult character because she was trying to make you dislike her. She was so afraid of letting someone love her that she did everything possible to build a wall. But I loved her. Her sass, her snark, her sweetness and her pain.

Adam was the perfect character to balance her out. He knew so much love and wasn't afraid to give some to her. He saw her and saw what she needed and never flinched from it.

Real life is messy. And so was this story. But you also have moments in real life that are redeemable because of love. And this was a great example. I also liked how it ended.

Yo! Hollywood!

I don’t usually get invested in YA romances beyond listening as background noise while I work. This book was more than a romance. It was a study of emotion during some of the most difficult situations people can experience. It dove in pretty deep. It is well written and was able to clearly present complicated scenes and concepts in ways that didn’t confuse. Every character was consistently themself and plot lines stayed true. It stayed away from being art house poignant where scenes can be interpreted differently by each observer. The messages being delivered were confident. The author swept listeners along the path she carved out instead of cheaply allowing us to find our own way.

This would make a terrific movie along the lines of other successful YA films. If “Kissing Booth” and OG “Wonder Years” had a baby, it might look a lot like this.

Cute

Adorable story. Very well written and other than a few mispronunciations on the female narrators part, it was also well performed.

Slow start, better ending

I can’t say I was entertained by this entire book but I was able to at least finish it. The story started off slow. It ended better. About halfway through it finally started to pick up. The performance was great. Loved the narrators.

So much better than I anticipated!

I went into this story with a pretty open mind, knowing its not my usual genre of choice. Being a 30 year old mother of 4, I put away my YA Sarah Dessen-esque novels many moons ago. But this novel was recommended (and free), so I took the bait. I am so glad I did. The characters are filled out, flawed and broken but not cliche. Their flaws aren't annoying as many have the tendency of being, where by the halfway point you're ready to strangle one character or another. Any of the frustration I felt about a character was easily explained by their age, maturity level or situation.
The story had a good flow to it, never dragging or rushed, scenes were described in poetic detail without feeling too wordy. The narrators are excellent as well. I love this book, and would recommend it to anyone.

Such a great book

This was an amazing book. It’s one that I will read again. I was sad when I got to the end, I didn’t want the story to be over.
