Summary

The unthinkable horror happens to Claire Wright. What is presented by her spouse as a trip to deliver a client's custom hat turns out as something more sinister. Only in her worst nightmare would she find herself abandoned at the local insane asylum. When Claire discovers the young doctor is interviewing her as the newest inmate at Hatchie River Asylum for the Insane, dreams of being a housewife and mother vanish forever. How could an otherwise blissful marriage go wrong and land her in this predicament? She's wondering more how she'll get out of it.

In 1941, there aren't many options for women. One day, she finds that option, but there are unintended consequences. Few support systems are in place, and she's praying one of them will come through for her. Can Claire face her fate, or will the gruesome secret of what happened at the asylum haunt her forever?

Escape from Purgatory

What an interesting and unique storyline! I think this book dragged a little in the middle but, overall, it held my attention from beginning to end. I sure hope that insane asylums, or whatever they might be called today, treat their patients a lot better than how Claire was treated in the story. Amanda Newcomb did a good job bringing this story to life.

A captivating story

This story had me hooked for the beginning. Claire is a sweet, obedient wife that only wants a family. When her husband left her at an asylum, the story really hooked me. I was just as lost as Claire as to what happened and why he left her there. In her time, women did not have a voice and there were not many supports for them. It was fascinating to hear about the world that Claire lived in, how asylums were and how they treated patients. At times it was so hard to read, but I could not stop, I had to find out more. I kept hoping for something or someone to save Claire. This is a must read.

Amanda Newcomb narrated Claire as I imagined her. Ms. Newcomb brought out the sweetness in Claire and her determination. Ms Newcomb has an easy to listen to voice. I found myself lost in the narration to the point that I felt as if I was part of the story. I hope to hear more from Ms. Newcomb.

🎧 Reviewed for Audiobook Obsession 🎧

This disturbing, but couldn’t quit listening story is pre World War Two when some women were more or less considered chattel and were callously discarded, however this story also has a redeeming twist, a satisfying HEA, and karma can come back and bite you where the sun doesn’t shine.
Amanda did a wonderful job narrating this story.
