Story
On a chilly February day two old friends meet in the throng outside a crematorium to pay their last respects to Molly Lane. Both Clive Linley and Vernon Halliday had been Molly's lovers in the days before they reached their current eminence, Clive as Britain's most successful modern composer, Vernon as editor of the quality broadsheet The Judge. Gorgeous, feisty Molly had had other lovers too, notably Julian Garmony, Foreign Secretary, a notorious right-winger tipped to be the next prime minister.

Story
Saturday, February 15, 2003. Henry Perowne is a contented man - a successful neurosurgeon, the devoted husband of Rosalind and proud father of two grown-up children. Unusually, he wakes before dawn, drawn to the window of his bedroom and filled with a growing unease. What troubles him as he looks out at the night sky is the state of the world - the impending war against Iraq, a gathering pessimism since 9/11, and a fear that his city and his happy family life are under threat.

It is June 1962. In a hotel on the Dorset coast, overlooking Chesil Beach, Edward and Florence, just married that morning, are sitting down to dinner in their room. Neither is entirely able to suppress anxieties about the wedding night to come. On Chesil Beach is another masterwork from Ian McEwan - a story about how the entire course of a life can be changed by a gesture not made or a word not spoken.

Story
Nutshell is a classic story of murder and deceit, told by a narrator with a perspective and voice unlike any in recent literature. A bravura performance, it is the finest recent work from a true master. To be bound in a nutshell, see the world in two inches of ivory, in a grain of sand. Why not, when all of literature, all of art, of human endeavour, is just a speck in the universe of possible things?

Searching through her mother's belongings, she finds clues about the West African father she never knew. Through reading his student diary, chronicling his involvement in radical politics in 1970s London, she discovers that he eventually became the president - some would say the dictator - of a small nation in West Africa. And he is still alive.

Brilliant reading of enduring love
The book itself is brilliant. The performance of the characters was great it was easy to distinguish who was who. My only note would be that personally I didn’t like the voices given to the female characters. They were a bit sharp and pointed at times which, as a woman I found mildly frustrating. But the range of the reader was fantastic.

Action literature
The novel has quite a lot of action for a "literary" work. Although the characters were interesting, none of them were at all likable, so it was hard to engage on an emotional level. The use of high-brow vocabulary and references were fitting to the protagonist's snobbishness, but also felt like the author showing off. The narration was (suitably) upper-crust, but this meant that, for me, it wasn't terribly pleasing to listen to. The recurring science references appealed to my geekish tendencies.

Absolutely thrilling!
This piece of art by Ian McEwan is one that shows his absolute dominance in narration and storytelling of modern literature.
