Summary

En los tiempos de Tiberio César empieza a expandirse la doctrina cristiana en toda Roma. Todavía clandestinamente, los adoradores del "dios único" se reúnen para compartir el mensaje del apóstol Pablo. Así lo hacen, por ejemplo, los hermanos Lucila y Nereo, quienes asisten a las lecturas que hace el sacerdote Malco. En contraste, los romanos ricos continúan tomando del mundo helénico las principales fuerzas de su cultura (dioses, letras, costumbres) y viendo en los judíos, enemigos implacables de su pueblo. La vida transcurre, así, en una suerte de oposición entre quienes empiezan a creer en Jesucristo y los que no. A este último grupo pertenecen los aristócratas Polión, Lucio Varo, Acrino y Axio, quienes pasan sus días devorando sendas comidas, degustando vinos exclusivos y discutiendo sobre poesía, riquezas y filosofía.
