Summary

The fate of mankind is in the hands of a group of 20-something science nerds in the sequel to Outland, by the Audible #1 best-selling author of the “Bobiverse” series.

The Yellowstone super-eruption has put an end to modern civilization. As cities and countries continue to fall, the colony of Rivendell in the alternate Earth known as Outland looks more and more like the only real hope for humanity. But life in Rivendell isn’t getting any simpler, either. Bill and Kevin continue to discover new worlds; the population continues to rise; winter is approaching; and everyone has their own opinion about how things should be run.

Then, a garbled plea for help from Omaha sends most of the security forces back Earthside to investigate, leaving Monica’s police force understaffed just as a large group of refugees arrive with its own ideas and power structure. With threats from both inside and outside, will the colony even survive until spring?

tis good

would be nice if he wrote more quickly.

Perhaps if he digitised his Brain and made copies they could work collaboratively?

It'd never work; it's far too easy to disagree on what to prioritise.

Great Follow up

Had the opportunity to ask Mr Taylor about a sequel to Outland a couple years back via Good Reads and was very excited when he confirmed he was writing this. It was worth the wait, sir. I can’t wait for the next installment (if there is one, hint hint)
As always Mr Porter did a fantastic job.

Brilliant

Great sequel. Was sorry when it ended. Brilliant narration from Ray Porter, as always. The Quantum Earth series is every bit as enjoyable as the Bobiverse series, which I highly recommend if you haven’t listened to it yet (also narrated by Ray Porter) I really hope Quantum Earth follows suit with loads more books.

Good and bad

It's a fun listen. As many have pointed out, the politic-section is just a bit weird; without trying to spoil, I find it hard to believe that given the situation those people are in, they would be giving this much attention to what kind of government they want.

Quite good, definitely enjoyable

A pleasant read, fun at times, maybe not particularly tense or dramatic but it’s hitting all the big-picture stuff that makes this series fun to follow. Two books in I feel a comment on the whole series so far is that it can feel unfocused at times, but I don’t mean that as negative as it sounds: It’s like a story that’s unfolding, and things happens, and it’s enjoyable following along and seeing how the solutions play out, but I’m not sure where it’s all going. It’s not a criticism but I think it’s an observation that matters to some, in the sense that to enjoy this you have to kind of just flow along and enjoy the scenery.

And no m offence to Mr. Taylor but my take is he doesn’t tend to go deep into dramatic character work, and that continues here where our heroes have mostly solidified, and there’s a colony going on in the background with 3-400 people we never get to know beyond “<McGuffin>’s boyfriend” or vague groups that eats on the lawn around our protagonists. Only the heroes and their antagonists seem to exist, and they exist to be pitted against each other in various ways.

On the other hand this approach, by eschewing a more traditional acts-based structure or forcing character arcs on us, leaves the story feeling more organic as it explores a novel aspect of post-apocalyptic colony-building by having it focus quite a bit on politics.

And Ray Porter puts in his usual excellent performance that makes it all so enjoyable.

Enjoyable romp, for the most part

I did enjoy this, but wished more time was spent on the events and the fallout of the eruption than the political wrangling of the camp. I didn’t hate these sections as the characters come across as a likeable and for the most part, agreeable bunch, but I looked forward to getting back to the main moving storyline.

I’m looking forward to the next instalment, although I suspect I can see where it’s heading.

Liked this more than the first one!

I really enjoyed the first one but some of the characters were a bit flat. But that was not an issue with this one. Had me snorting with laughter on the tube - entertainment in itself! Looking forward to the next one.
