About this listen

Carentan, France, 1944 - Ethan Martin, a soldier in the 101st Airborne, is fighting for his life. But soon he will learn what peril truly is when he is ripped from his world and transported to a land of magic, swords, and dragons. And though the Nazis are now far, far away, danger is closer than ever.

The eternal emperor, Shinzan has destroyed the mages. Only a few dragons remain in exile. And now that Ethan - son of Praxis Dragonvein - has returned, he must destroy him as well. Faced with unimaginable power, Ethan has only one hope - to reach the dwarf kingdom of Elyfoss before Shinzan can find him.

Predictable but fun

By the numbers fantasy story which telegraphs it's story points well in advance, but delivered exactly what I wanted in terms of a good fantasy journey with a point of view protagonist.

Interesting start to the series, shows potential

I found it a little hard to get into at first, there seemed the be a whole lot going on and I couldn't see how much of it was connecting to the story line, but slowly everything started to fall into place. I'm curious to see where the story goes from here.

Good read

It took a while for me to feel I could relate and like the characters. They seemed a bit bland but the story was interesting and I liked the writing style. It was worth the wait it all seemed to click into place and now I'm looking forward to starting book 2.

Fairly standard but well done

This is a fairly formulaic lost heir with stranger in a strange land mix fantasy story, but it’s well done and I was hooked.

Good listen

I chose this book because I like the narrator and thought I would see what it was like.

I'm about to purchase and listen to the second book, so that should give you an idea of what I think.

I have used Good and not Great in my title, I would say it is somewhere in between with the potential to swing either way.

Waste of what could have been an interesting mix

The whole child sent to earth and then pulled back to another world seemed an interesting idea with the possibility of some depth. But alas this was all but forgotten about in 2 chapters. very generic fantasy, little to no character depth and although the narrators voice read well for the narration his individual character voices lacked an emotional connection. Happy, sad, angry they always sounded more or less the same.
Sadly won't be listening to the next 4 books as I'm not interested in how it ends.

Strong start to a series

This is a very good start to what will be a great series. I had been toying with wether to get this book or not. But when I saw all 3 books in the bye 3 books for 2 credits, decided to get them and I think I got a great deal. This is a good adventure / quest story with some good action throne in. I really enjoyed this book and something else going for it is that it is narrated by Derek Perkins and he always does a great job with this type of book. If you like David A Wells then you are going to like this series as this reminds me of his books.

A good start to what I hope is a great story

This is the beginning of a series, so there was a lot of world building. At times I wondered if it was simply a Tolkien copy, but it just had its similarities. I like the typical portrayal of the Dwarves and Elves, and the little twists. All in all I enjoyed it and will continue listening to the rest, eventually.

Why did I buy all 5 books

The story premise is pretty good, especially using the time slip and I always love magic, dwarfs and elves. But the story is messy, focusing too much on character interplay that is just not interesting. And the narration, I think it’s being generous of 3 stars, but part of the blame goes on the person selecting him. The main character is American and the narrator can’t do an American accent. I have another 4 books to go through 🫤
