Summary
Jakkin, a 15-year-old bond boy, works with many others in Sarkkhan's worm farm/nursery on the desert planet Austar IV. Jakkin plans to steal a baby dragon from the farm to raise, hoping to train the dragon to fight and earn him enough money to buy himself out of bond, as well as the dragon's freedom.
Eventually, with the help of Akki, a girl at the nursery, he succeeds and names his dragon Heart's Blood. After a year of training and growing, Akki arranges a way for Jakkin and his beautiful red dragon to engage in their first battle.

can't even listen to it
I loved this book as a kid and wanted to revisit it but I received an error message each and every time I tried to play it. Worthless. At least it was free through my Amazon account. I would have been upset and disappointed if I had paid for an audio book that didn't work.
I won't be recommending audible to anyone any time soon...

A classic, but not appropriate for all ages...
This book was a childhood favorite of mine -- but in retrospect, reading it as an adult, I realize this probably might not be the sort of book which should (as it was in my childhood) be recommended to 8 year-olds. There's a lot about love, ambition, responsibility and loyalty -- as well as learning to both love and take delight in the accomplishments of others. Excellent lessons for children who hope to have pets, as well as for later in life when it's time for them to raise children of their own. But there's some pretty graphic violence and a few frank discussions of sexual activities that...made me pause when I thought about recommending it to a child i know. Read this for yourself and decide how you feel about loaning it to children. For my part, I'll be moving on to the rest of the series again! The reader is good, but not exceptional -- speeding it up to 1.5x or 2x might also help.

Old story brought to life.
My first introduction to this was PBS story break. Loved it then, love it now. Great sci-fi touches without being too heavy on the tech. interesting work up on the world.

Still fun after all these years
There are a few themes in this story that may not have aged very well, but it's still fun. I enjoyed it in the 6th grade, and I enjoyed it now many years later.

Treasure from my childhood
It's been a long time since I've read this book and it brought back memories. The narrator did an awesome job of giving each character their own voice..Sarkkhan sounded a bit like Sean Connery...but I enjoyed it immensely.

The Nostalgia!
The book is better than I remember, especially since I understand all of it. Such an interesting world and good story.
