There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

REVIEW FOR 14, by Peter Clines, read by Ray Porter
- By Amazon Customer on 07-06-14
Summary
Twenty-six year old Jeri Halston is brilliant, with looks as stunning as her intellect. She should be killing it on Wall Street or speed-climbing the corporate ladder. But she isn’t. Maybe her father’s death the year before is to blame. Maybe it's a quarter-life crisis. Even Jeri doesn’t know for sure. That's why she's pouring drinks for baby-faced co-eds and sullen old men at Joe's Last Stand Saloon. Tending bar at the ancient saloon on old Route 66 seems like the perfect way to sort things out.
At least, that was the plan. But then the letters started arriving. Funny, rambling confessions of love from an unknown admirer, postmarked from every corner of the world. A Polaroid photo in each letter reveals a tantalizing glimpse of their sender, but never his true identity. And always the same strange sign off - Don't order dog. Jeri can't help but be intrigued. But when an overzealous Homeland Security agent named Tom Coleman sees the letters and casually begins investigating the trail of Jeri's mysterious writer, a pattern starts to appear. A terrifying pattern. A pattern of murder and international terrorism that will throw Jeri's life into turmoil and force her to question everything she knows about the world, her country, and even her own past.
Please note: This novel has also been published under an alternate title: Ice Man Cometh.

Silly with a 'made for TV' sensibility
This may end up being one of your favorite new series but it was just fluff to me. I really enjoyed the narrator and liked that it takes place in Flagstaff, AZ but that's about the extent of it. It reads like a light version of The Blacklist or some other TV show where a woman finds out how strong she really is under the guidance of a man who is not who he appears to be. Oh, and throw in the current but stale theme in screenplays, corporate greed, add a little romance, sprinkle with some between-girls banter and you've got Don't Order Dog. Yawn.

Loved this story!
If you could sum up Don't Order Dog in three words, what would they be?
Fantastic fun ride!
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
A slow starter that quickly picks up pace. Well developed characters and a plot that lured me in until I couldn't stop listening.
Which scene was your favorite?
Great, highly-evocative scenes from around the world kept my interest throughout, but my favorite place was the warm, cozy bar in Flagstaff.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I listened to this book in just three sittings - a first for me.
Any additional comments?
Can't wait for the next book!

Too much foul language
I'm only in chapter 14 out of 70, but I can't stand all the foul language. It really gets in the way of listening to the story, which was very slow to start, anyway. I'm returning this title, something I don't do very often.

epic thriller fail
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
If the actions and dialogue made any sense in the real world, it could have been an interesting story.
What was most disappointing about C. T. Wente’s story?
The devil is in the details and there were so many details that just didn't add up. I simply can't believe that this story is possible unless I also believe the world is peopled with idiots. The characters act so contrary to reason. So many times I had to laugh out loud at the failed attempts to be dramatic.
What three words best describe Paul Michael’s voice?
I actually liked his work with another series but one of his characters (Male) sounded inexplicably like Mae West. The way he read another character sounded too urban for Flagstaff.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Don't Order Dog?
The scene when a person who had just been shot with a tranquilizer proceeds to question the shooter in detail about what she was shot with and their motive and he advised her shot her with a fast acting paralytic... not really fast if you're standing there talking about it. And every time a character fails to say the first thing that would come to anyone's mind to prolong the drama. It's a cheap trick and was used far too much. I could go on and on.

PAGE TURNER!
Would you listen to Don't Order Dog again? Why?
This is one of the best spy -thriller-espionage books I've read in many, many years. Some of the character's language is pretty raw but I decided to hang in as I was hooked! I can't wait for the 2nd in this new series.
What other book might you compare Don't Order Dog to and why?
It reminded me somewhat of Robert Galbraith novels - Cuckoo's Calling and The Silkworm. I can't think of any higher praise!
What about Paul Michael’s performance did you like?
It seemed natural and real.
