About this listen

Captivatingly read by the author, Natalie Haynes.

Get ready to meet the goddesses, from the
Sunday Times bestselling author of Stone Blind and Pandora’s Jar, Natalie Haynes.

These are the stories of the Greek goddesses. As fearsome, powerful and beloved as their male counterparts, it’s time to look beyond the columns of a ruined temple to the awesome power within . . .

We meet Hera, who, whilst most often known for enacting vicious, creative revenge on the women – mortal or otherwise – who catch the wandering eye of her husband Zeus, turns out not to be such a villain after all.

We meet Demeter, a mother who will go to any lengths, no matter the cost, to retrieve her daughter Persephone from Hades’ clutches.

We’ll be introduced to The Furies, three women who will literally go to the ends of the earth to enact bloody vengeance but who, surprisingly, are the goddesses who can teach us the most about the way we live now.

Examining the role of these goddesses and more, Divine Might will change everything you thought you knew about our most ancient stories. Full of fire, fury and devotion, Natalie Haynes brings the divine women of Olympia kicking and screaming into the modern age.

'The great champion of women in Greek myth . . . One of the delights of the book is that Haynes reacquaints us with forgotten goddesses' – Daily Mail

Another in the series of excellent books by the author. Easy-listening, informative, humourous, it's a 5 star book if you enjoy those things combined.

I really enjoyed listening to this, Natalie Haynes was a fantastic narrator. The different chapters about the Greek goddesses were all interesting and informative! I would definitely recommend if you enjoy Greek mythology.

I temporarily struggled with the chapter on muses. I even considered returning the book, but with the next chapter, on Hera, I was glad I had persisted. The author does an excellent job of informing us on the female gods, and the narrator delivers the wit so well, that I was repeatedly grinning and even laughing out loud.

Witty and informative

The author's narration is wonderful - clear, measured and conversational.

The characters described are also brought to life with all their imperfections, as well as their powers. These gods were as flawed as the humans they watched over.

I removed one star overall as there is too much 21st Century moralising, notably about how women were treated. It would have been better without the polemics.

Very enjoyable (non-academic) listen

Brilliant overview of classic Greek goddesses thats helps the reader/ listener put into perspective the well-populated universe of female deities. Makes me want to read even more of the numerous, recent female centered re-tellings of early Greek mythology. Heavily researched and told with a frequent twist of well informed humour. Excellent narration by the author. Sets a high bar for what to read/ listen to next.

The only downside is not being able to see the art Haynes references. A brilliant insight into the Greek Goddess’s.

Brilliant.
