About this listen

When journalist Isabel Vincent befriends Edward, both are at a crossroads: He wants to follow his late wife to the grave, and she is ready to give up on love.

Isabel's friend, Edward's daughter, lives far away and has asked Isabel to check in on her dad in New York. At first Isabel is just doing her duty. But soon this charming, elegant, cultured man has become her dear friend. She gives him a reason to go on without his beloved wife of 72 years, and he gives her a renewed faith that happiness is possible.

Each chapter in this true-life tale takes place at dinner at Edward's apartment, and, like Edward's meals, the whole adds up to so much more than the ingredients.

I would have loved to have known Edward. What a gentleman. And would have ate any of his delicious meals. They sounded divine.

I have read a couple of books which have been researched and written by Isabel Vincent that were beyond outstanding (Bodies and Souls is a compelling read). This was a far more gentle and personal piece which I enjoyed and found thought provoking especially in terms of how joining together over food can be extremely powerful, provide a bridge and common sharing experience.

A tale of loss, love, friendship and intimacy

The narration was not easy to listen to though, a bit robotic and toneless in parts which made a lovely story quite difficult to listen to.

Lovely descriptions of the food and friendship
