Exciting plot and strong characterisation!

After 'Im Tal des Fuches', 'Die Betrogene' is the second novel I have read by Charlotte Link - and it will most definitely not be the last! As is the case with the former, 'Die Betrogene' is set in the UK, and the author shows exceptional knowledge of British geography, culture and, in places, even humour throughout, thanks either to extensive research or experience of spending time here, or perhaps a combination of both.

All her characters are larger than life, even the villains (perhaps especially the villains), and her plot takes us on a journey containing many twists and turns, resulting in a suspense-filled, fast-paced novel which is impossible to put down.

It is beautifully written, and even in German, Link manages to lend a true sense of 'Britishness' to the narrative. Her detailed descriptions of Liverpool, my home city, as well as areas of North Yorkshire, for instance, have the effect of transporting me back there, and I doubt that she would be able to write with any more authority on Frankfurt am Main, her place of birth.

I cannot recommend 'Die Betrogene' highly enough and will definitely be reading 'Die Suche' and 'Ohne Schuld', the next two books in this series, as well as other works by this hugely talented author, in the not too distant future.

Schablonenhafte Figuren, unbeholfene Sprache

ich habe noch nie Charlotte Link gelesen, obwohl ich weiß, daß sie als Teenager einen beachteten historischen Roman geschrieben hat. Die Betrogene habe ich wegen der vielen guten Kritiken als spannenden Kriminalroman gewählt. Ich habe bis zum Ende gehört, denn ich wollte dann doch wissen, wie sich die Geschichte auflöst. Deshalb 2 Sterne statt einem.

Ich bin wirklich überrascht, wie erfolgreich Link als Autorin ist. Ihre Figuren sind schablonenhaft und unsympathisch. ich fühle keine Anteilnahme an ihrem Schicksal, sondern bin genervt von ihren Gezeter und Selbstmitleid und von Links bemühter Laienpsycholigie. Das ändert sich für eine Person gegen Ende, aber über deren Innenleben erfährt man wenig. Viele Prämissen der Handlung ergeben keinen Sinn. Ihre Sprache erinnerte mich immer wieder an Amtsdeutsch, so sehr fehlt ihr Charm und Leichtigkeit. Viele, viele Details, die es nicht braucht und die deshalb langweilen. Link findet nicht zum Ende; eine Künstlerin weiß, wann sie aufhören sollte. Ein Buch vom Fließband.

Claudia Michelsen mag ich als Schauspielerin gerne. Hier geht mir über die vielen Stunden ihre gehauchte arme-Hascherl Stimme, die sie sowohl Frauen wie Kindern leiht, letztlich auf die Nerven.
