Summary

Diamonds are being smuggled on a formidable scale from Africa to America via Britain. 007’s assignment is to break the smuggling ring. It’s a dangerous mission that takes him to the racecourse and mud-baths of Saratoga Springs, the gaming tables of Las Vegas, the ghost town of Spectreville and beyond. The Spangled Mob threatens to be too much even for Bond, but help is at hand in the shape of co-conspirator Tiffany Case.

Includes an exclusive bonus interview with Damian Lewis.

Ian Fleming was born in London in 1908. He was educated at Eton and worked as a journalist in Moscow and a banker and stockbroker in London before becoming personal assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence during the Second World War. He wrote his first Bond novel, Casino Royale, in 1952 at Goldeneye, his home in Jamaica. Since then James Bond has gone on to become a global phenomenon.

Damian Lewis has twice been nominated for a Golden Globe, for his role as Sergeant Brody in Homeland and also for his role as WWII hero Richard Winter in Band of Brothers. Other TV credits include The Forsyte Saga, Life, Warriors and Jeffrey Archer: The Truth. His film appearances include The Escapist and Your Highness.

Critic reviews

"Ian Fleming writes with a kind of pushing, bloodcurdling elegance. His thrillers are models of fastidious murder." ( New York Times)
"The remarkable thing about this book is that it is written by an Englishman. The scene is almost entirely American and it rings true to an American. I am unaware of any other writer who has accomplished this." (Raymond Chandler)
"Mr. Fleming has unusual virtues: a fine eye for places—in this book there are admirable accounts of Saratoga and Las Vegas—an ability to convey his own interest in the mechanics of gambling, and an air of knowledgeableness that many writers in this genre lack." ( Times Literary Supplement)
"His hero, James Bond, fulfils every male fantasy known to me." ( The Spectator)
"James Bond is one of the most cunningly synthesized heroes in crime-fiction." ( Observer)

3/5

Another generic Bond adventure with the usual trimmings. Bond's mission is to investigate and disrupt a diamond smuggling racket, leading him to America.

- Fleming's attention to detail is as present as ever, be it horse racing, card games in casino's or describing large steam trains.

- The plot and characters just didn't thrill me in this one. The book was okay, the characters were okay. The stand out was Felix Leiter who is my favourite Bond character.

- As with most Bond novels, be prepared for heavy doses of racism and sexism. In particular be aware of the Bond girl in this story. Her backstory has sexual assault and rape in it and subsequent trauma and this is dealt with by suggesting that the right man could fix her.

A fun book for a seasoned Bond fan. New fans should start with Casino Royale.

4 stars.

Damian Lewis does a good job with the narration. The story is in some ways better than the film. By this I mean more plausible and real. The tension created by Damian at the end of the book was superb. Great stuff.!

Excellent all round

Another excellent Bond novel & reading in this series. It shows the depth and breadth of talent of English actors that each Bond book is read by a different actor. Despite his rather posh voice Lewis does an excellent, subtle Bond and his accent for the American heroine is natural and convincing. Incidentally, the plot of the movie bears little resemblance to the book.

Bobby Axelerod reads Bond! Love it!

This was incredible. I am a huge fan of Billions and Bond. So having Damian reading this fascinating book was a treat. Thanks Damian, thanks Bobby.

Love the Fleming Bond books but...

Damien Lewis is so dull. All of the other readers in this series are superb, they've created THE definitive Bond readings, but Damien Lewis is really, really boring to listen to. I lose track half way though sentences and I've lost count of the number of times I've had to skip back when I realise that I've been watching paint dry rather than listen. BORING.

Diamonds are Forever!

I've watched the movies but it's great to hear the story as the author intended! Good narrator!

Great adventure, lives up to expectations

The high quality of narration in this series continues, this time read by Damian Lewis. His accents sound superb and gives each character individuality.

This story is much better than I remembered. Some of the mobsters are a little cartoonist, but the narration really gives the characters or a more three dimensional element. The Spang brothers do not make as memorable villains as Mr Big or Drax of the previous stories, which is why this book is not as good as those other adventures. Maybe it's because there are two of them instead of just one.

In fact the arch villains get very little air time in this story and show no individual characterisation as all, compared to the more vivid mobsters working under them. The plot was also a little predictable in terms of

Nevertheless, the set pieces and action scenes are superb. Subtle things like the atmosphere of the race track at dawn, or the woman silently screaming on the giant cinema screen whilst Bond is confronted by hoodlums. It's worth listening to this audiobook for these alone plus Damian Lewis' excellent narration. Fans won't be disappointed.

Throughly mediocre

I've read all the Bond books before but this is my first time on audiobook. This has always been a bit of a weak entry to the series. Maybe in the 50s when people were taking boats to America things like Vegas would be more exotic and enthralling but in the modern day my colleague just flew there for a hen do. The characters aren't anything special and Bond is grumpy throughout. Narration was decent.
