Summary
This is the strange and fascinating life of Erwin Rommel, from his days as a youth in Imperial Germany - when he had a child out of wedlock with an early girlfriend - through his lauded military exploits during World War I to his death by suicide during World War II, after he attempted a failed coup against Hitler.
Rommel was a man of contradictions: a soldier who wrote a best-selling book about World War I, a commander who went from commanding Hitler's bodyguard to trying to kill him, and a serious military mind who was known for participating in practical jokes.
In Desert Fox, author Samuel Mitcham (Bust Hell Wide Open) confronts the truth about Rommel and takes a close look at his military actions and reflections.

Fails to mention Bonner Fellers?
I really enjoyed this book, although it sounded more like an essay, perhaps due to the narration.
Rommel was no doubt a very good general. His reputation of being a genius, was no doubt aided, by the American Bonner Feller's broadcasts back to the States, which gave Rommel all the British plans and dispositions.
Bonner Feller was unaware he was using a code, which had been broken by the Germans. A code book had been stolen, photographed and then replaced back into the safe, where it had originally came from... .

Very good listen and brought the story to life.
As a historical book it was interesting and captive. I really enjoyed listening to this story about history gone bye.

Put Aside Prejudice...
I debated for some time before downloading this as my father was involved (as a teenage squaddie) in D-day, and subsequently the defence of Caen. It seemed somehow disloyal, but having taken the plunge I’m glad I did. This is a fascinating story, read really well. Rommel was the ultimate professional soldier and very good at his job, although obviously not without his flaws. Give it a try, to get a different perspective on the Allied victory - and for confirmation that Hitler and his inner circle were every bit as terrible as history portrays them to be.

Amazing Detail, Amazing Story!
This book captures you in the very beginning filling you with interesting information and details on Rommel you may or may not have ever known. The detail of the African campaigns and Rommel’s amazing strategies to fight out his way out of jams when he was severely outnumbered. This book also brings to light that Rommel was not a nazi, but a courageous field marshal. This book very much exposes how politics in the nazi party eventually crushed their war efforts cronyism and poor decisions based on politics. This is one of the best books I have ever read!!! The narrator is fantastic and I will definitely grow my library of Samuel W Mitcham Jr. books. This book is written so well!

Interesting
Good overall view of the "Desert Fox's" military career. It might be a better listen if you already have a good understanding of WWII. The section on North Africa is very good with details of specific battles/engagements. The narrator was not my favorite.

One Word: Excellent!!
This is one of the most fascinating reads I’ve had on WW2. Loved Rommel before for how he stood up to Hitler in addition to his exceptional generalship. However now that I’ve listened to this book I’m all the more intrigued. Absolute must-have for any history buff’s collection!!

Amazing detailS
I believe the details in this book of the internal workings of the Nazi party, and the interactions between Hitler and his field marshals are amazing and he will be hard-pressed to find this level of detail in any other books.

So thorough and complete it became quite mundane sadly!
Amazing research and a thorough biography on facts figures battles wins and losses!
Came across quite dry and unemotional .. maybe a reflection of Rommel s character!
Overall well worth the listen! A sad end so I suppose one is nt filled with positivity by the end so my score of 3 is probably a little unfair!
