Summary

Beide Kunstmärchen, "Der blonde Eckbert" (1797) und "Der Runenberg" (1804) repräsentieren den seltenen Typ des tragischen Märchens mit einer spezifisch romantischen Existenzproblematik. Der Held sucht vergebens mit Hilfe geheimnisvoller Mächte sein Glück zu erlangen. Die Natur erscheint als leeres, Schauder erregendes Chaos, die Welt hat dämonischen Charakter. Wer das Wunderbare, die verborgenen Urgeheimnisse aufzudecken oder gar materiell zuverwerten versucht, den verweisen die Götter in seine Grenzen und schlagen ihn mit Wahnsinn.

"In diesem Naturmärchen", schreibt Tieck, "mischt sich das Liebliche mit dem Schrecklichen, das Seltsame mit dem Kindischen, und verwirrt unsere Phantasie bis zum poetischen Wahnsinn, um diesen selber nur in unserem Inneren zu lösen und frei zu machen." Die Märchen sind zugleich Dokumente gegen die heute vielfach falsche Einschätzung der deutschen Romantik als einer Zeit heitererRealitätsferne. Zugleich lassen sie aber erahnen, worin das wiedererwachte große Interesse an der Romantik besteht. Unverkennbar sind die Parallelen, die in einer intensiven Suche nach einer neuen individuellen und gesellschaftlichen Identität bestehen, im Erahnen der Begrenztheit menschlicher Erkenntnisfähigkeit, schließlich in der Ehrfurcht vor den letzten Wundern und Geheimnissendes Lebens.

Reiner Unglaub hat sich inbesondere als Interpret derdeutschen Romantik einen unbestrittenen Namen gemacht. Es sei hier an seine "Hyperion"-Lesung von Hölderlin bzw. an die des "Taugenichts" von Eichendorff, bzw. an seine Lesung.

Romantic - and how!

A magnificent, resonant reading from Reiner Unglaub. What more? Two classic Novellen of Romanticism: frightful forests, grim mountains, mysterious old women, retribution for dreadful acts, preternatural animals - and, of course, Die Blaue Blume!

At moments, it all seems a bit contrived, but let’s not forget that Ludwig Tieck, together with his contemporaries, was beginning to delve into human psychology, the potential of mind and imagination and the fact that there is no such thing as chance.

So, while the Grimms’ fairy tales may provide a more consistent and charming, if often terrifying, read, it is these literary pieces which are seminal in the development of culture.
