Als Wildtöter und sein Blutsbruder Chingachgook erfahren, dass der Fallensteller Tom Hutter, der mit seinen beiden Töchtern Judith und Hetty mitten im See in einer Wasserburg wohnt, von den Huronen überfallen werden soll, eilen sie zu Hilfe.
Der erste Band Der Wildtöter wurde im US-Spielfilm Lederstrumpf: Der Wildtöter (1957) mit Lex Barker für das Kino verfilmt. Der zweite Band Der letzte Mohikaner diente gleich etlichen filmischen Adaptionen als Vorlage.
