Summary

Warning: You can expect a kick butt supernatural bounty hunter and a possessive demon love interest. They both have a lot of growing to do. If you don't like flawed characters that have to improve—this one won't be for you. Demons of New Chicago is slow-burn but high steam. It was written for the readers that struggle to find books that have enough action and romance.

If you enjoy the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews, the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning, or Demon Days and Vampire Nights by K.F. Breene then dive right in to the dangerous depths of New Chicago. Beware of headstrong heroines with snark. These ladies don’t bark. They bite.

I’m hired to stop a demon summoning. The last thing I expect is to end up bonded to one instead.

Being a supernatural bounty hunter isn’t exactly a popular job. But after the magic wars, there aren’t many things a human can do that will put food on the table.

Thankfully anything my right hook can’t handle, my guns can.

Or so I thought.

When a demon summoning runs awry, the being that comes into this world changes everything.

I’m not sure if he’s truly a monster or a god, but one look into his flame filled eyes and I know–Ronan will never let me go.

If he can catch me, that is.

Game on, motherf*cker.

Dystopian UF with demon doms and magic bombs

I came to this series giving the opening book two stars because, while I dug the dystopian vibe and Piper as a jaded bounty hunter of supernaturals, I was turned off by the misogyny and overly sexualized plots. Nine times out of ten, when there’s a victim, she’s a girl who’s been abused. The romances are based on a fated-mates concept, further removing agency. All the couples involve alpha-males who growl, grope, and dominate. Even the cover art, with the Daisy Dukes, peddled skin over over substance.

And yet, book 1 had a gritty urban fantasy story with multiple kickbutt gals, action, and a fresh twist on magic coming to the world in a way that left humans at the bottom of the food chain. So, when book 2 popped up on sale, I gave the series a second listen. Lo and behold, all the things I liked got better and the things I disliked slacked off.

Now, having heard the entire four book arc, I have to say I’ve been converted. The fated-mates thing and the demon-dom thing ended up being a (mostly) necessary part of the story. Adam Gold made the uber-possessive, danger-flirting Hell-a-hot. And, even though there are a handful of deliciously dirty scenes, this ended up being a great urban fantasy story with an entire cast of strong women. In fact, one of my favorite aspects of this series was the relationships between sisters, witches, succubi and other female supernaturals.

This is still more romance than urban fantasy. I would have liked for some victories to have been based on smarts and skill rather than convenient Mary Sue powers. Also, book 4 has some audio issues, including a voice change for the Nathalie character that became very nasal. But, all four books for 1 credit makes this a series I recommend.
