About this listen

Deathworld centers on Jason dinAlt, a professional gambler who uses his somewhat erratic psionic abilities to tip the odds in his favor. He is challenged by a man named Kerk Pyrrus (who turns out to be the ambassador from the planet Pyrrus) to turn a large amount of money into an immense sum by gambling at a government-run casino. He succeeds and survives the planetary government's desperate efforts to steal back the money.

In a fit of ennui, he decides to accompany Kerk to his home, despite being warned that it is the deadliest world ever colonized by humans... DEATHWORLD!

Deathworld is one of the classics of the Golden Age of science fiction, born in the pages of Astounding Science Fiction under the editorship of John W. Campbell, Jr.

"Ever see a plant with teeth that bite?"

"Ever see a plant with teeth that bite?"
My SF life sort of grew up with, amongst other giants, Harry Harrison's Stainless Steel Rat so it was a delight to go to Deathworld with gambler and psy enabled Jason din Alt, to the planet where even the grass is out to kill. As the murderous attacks increase, how can anyone survive?
Read by Christian Rummel, his performance kept the book fresh and exciting. A recommended read for any science fiction fan, currently available for free on Audible plus. The

a all time favourite of mine - this set of books along with the stainless steel rat books I rarely grow tired of.

Classic concept

Deathworld by now feels like a classic concept, and Harrison's original take is very inventive and has clearly had lots of influence on sci-fi and fantasy later on. That said I found Deathworld to be a little pulpy to my taste, falling into the traps of the style very easily. The protagonist, a psy-sensitive pro gambler, is very much the classic Capable Man trope in the sense that he is inexplicably good at everything. His motivations are thin, to day the least, and there are many plot-relevant leaps of logic that don't seem very thought through. I liked the book from the perspective of ease of enjoyment and its influence, and Harrison's writing style is straight forward and efficient. Sometimes it's okay for sci-fi to NOT be overly philosophical!

Good old-fashioned sci-fi

Good, but oh so old-fashioned.
a bit too much of the shoot first, then struggle to think of any questions.

I enjoyed it

I listened to this (40-odd years after reading it) just after listening to Garden of Rama. Both have a similar be good to people and your planet message but this one is entertaining, and here and there it’s funny. I think I’ll look for Slippery Jim de Griz and Angelina next… Harry Harrison is always entertaining.
