Summary
Plaguers prowl the earth. Humans are their prey. Power must be taken.
In the Afterworld, only mercenaries leave the walled cities and have rights to the salvage needed for survival. Sulan can only dream of becoming one of them…
Until she discovers the Meat Grinder. It’s a race from one end of San Francisco to the other, through streets infested with flesh-eating plaguers. If Sulan can finish the race, she’ll become a mercenary. Does she have what it takes to survive, or will she be more meat for the Meat Grinder?
Dead Run is the first book in the high-octane Afterworld Apocalypse series. If you like the dystopian future of Mad Max and the gritty characters of 28 Days Later, you’ll love this action-packed story.

Loved the worldbuilding
The characters were likeable and I loved the worldbuilding. The apocalyptic world (with plaguers) was already established before the prologue, which is set in the past. The prologue is fast paced, but then the pace slows down in chapter one (present), so it felt a bit disjointed. Once the story got going again, it was engaging. There is a cliffhanger at the end of the book, and (generally) I hate cliffhangers, but from what I can see from the pre-orders for the other books in this series, each book is the next stage in the characters’ journey (e.g. book one is focussed on the Meat Grinder), so it’s more of a ‘soft’ cliffhanger rather than an abrupt ending, and it didn’t annoy me as much as they usually do.
I recommend that readers who dislike 'loose ends' wait until the whole series is released before starting book one. This shouldn’t be too long to wait because the author is going for a quick release on this series (one book per month).
The narrator did a great job bringing the story to life, but the speech was a bit fast at times (when the characters got overly excited or angry). I listened to this book at a slightly slower speed and this enabled me to catch words that I might otherwise have missed.
I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author, and I'm leaving a voluntary review.

Great book excellent narrator
The narrator of this book is excellent. I really enjoyed listening. Molly Secours voice really draws you in. She makes the book come to life. The story is fantastic, plenty of action, deceit, and humour. Twins separated as babies to keep a vaccine secret and safe from the power hungry warlords. Meeting again years later and being introduced to each other as cousins, until a compromising position reveals the truth. The warlords from each faction will not let anything or anyone get in the way of them getting this vaccine, Can the twins be kept safe?
