Flere badegæster havde dagen igennem set ham sole sig i klitterne, men nu lå stranden lå fuldstændig øde hen, hyllet i havgus. Kun manden i de blå badebukser lå stadig i gryden i klitterne. En flue kravlede frem og gik på vingerne igen, og næsten samtidig slog vinden en flig af håndklædet til side. Manden rørte sig overhovedet ikke. Under hans hoved var sandet farvet brunrødt. Noget var helt galt! Hvem var han? Hvem havde dræbt ham - og hvorfor? Det skulle vise sig, at der var mange, som havde god grund til at ønske ham død. Under opklaringen af mordet opruller makkerparret Høyer og Therkelsen historien om en meget mærkelig menneskeskæbne.
