London, 1782. The Bow Street constables are swift to act, until they discover that the deceased woman was a highly paid prostitute, at which point they cease to care entirely. Enlisting the help of thieftaker Peregrine Child, their inquiry delves into the hidden corners of Georgian society, a world of artifice, deception and secret lives.
But with many gentlemen refusing to speak about their dealings with the dead woman, and Caro’s own reputation under threat, finding the killer will be harder, and more treacherous, than she can know...

A Diamond!
Multi-faceted, many-layered and brilliant. Every human relationship, every frailty and deviation, explored in an historical novel of incredible breadth and width. I didn’t think Shepherd-Robinson could top her extraordinary debut, but she did, and then some. I look forward to her next masterpiece with bated breath. Bravo!

Georgian London brought to life. The Beau Monde, Gin Alley and the complex world of prostitution.
. Lucy Scott brings the whole many layered world of Georgian London alive and full of energy. The story bowls along as Caro tries to solve the mystery of the prostitute murdered in Vauxhall Gardens. An excellent unexpected finale.

Excellent book made even better by narrator.
A really absorbing book which seems very well researched. I loved the no-holds barred details and the characterisations. What really sold it to me was the narrator for whom no accent and no character's voice seemed beyond her. Without a doubt one of the best narrators I've ever listened to and will seek out more of her work as well as that of the author.

Brilliant Narration
A story bringing to life the seamy side of 18th century London. Quite an eye opener and superb narration by Lucy Scott brought the whole book to life.

Great but a little too long
I really enjoyed this book and found the characters engaging and I invested in their growth and storyline, my only caveat being I felt it could have ended earlier, I found the same with the authors previous book, I realise I am probably in the minority on this

Brilliant!
This is my first book by this author and will not be my last after listening to this story. I feared it may be dull and hard to digest but the blend of historic detail with a great plot was thoroughly entertaining and I finished it wishing desperately that a follow-up would be already available. The narration was just what was needed for this story and whilst I would not say that the 15 hours+ flew by, I never stopped wanting to know how the story would end.
