Summary

Raine is seventeen-years-old and still on the run. She can see the dead, a secret that could get her killed. Seeking refuge with a deluded cult is her latest bad decision but rescuing an injured woman in the snow is soon revealed to be a horrific mistake. Hazia endangers not just Raine, but the whole world: she's escaped from Redwinter, fortress-monastery of the Draoihn, the warrior magicians who answer to no king or queen of the land, but to their own Grand Master. They will stop at nothing to retrieve what she's stolen.

Raine must survive by her wits, and her skill with a bow in a world turned upside down. A battle, a betrayal and a horrific revelation finds her herself inside Redwinter, where anyone caught communing with ghosts is put to death. As conspirators plot to release an ancient enemy, Raine's ability to see the dead might be their only hope, but to use her power would see her condemned.

Fantastic start to a new epic series.

Book 1: Daughter Of Redwinter of The Redwinter Chronicles by Ed McDonald.

Those who see the dead soon join them. It's great to see Ed McDonald back with a new fantastic book, Daughter Of Redwinter, the first book of his new series, The Redwinter Chronicles.

Ed McDonald has crafted and weaved a beautifully detailed fantasy story in a new and engaging world, rife with an intriguing cast of characters, demons, and magical organisations.

The setting is a fantasy world set in the Highlands of Scotland, with rival clans, the Draoihn of Redwinter, a fortress-monastery who warrior magicians are the law and answer to no king.

There were a few slow parts, but all in all, I was happy with how the story progressed. When it gets going, the twist and turns and plot have you hooked, making it very hard to put down.

Is this story, our main protagonist, Raine, a girl of seventeen, is trying to find where she belongs in the world. She is a very clever and witty character, but when she stumbles across an injured girl in the forest being chased by the Draoihn, her whole life is about to change forever.

Excellent story, crafted by excellent author. If you haven't checked out Ed McDonalds books yet, especially The Blackwing trilogy, I very highly recommend that you do. I'm so looking forward to the next instalment, Traitor of Redwinter, October can't come fast enough....😁🔥💀🗡🖤

A slow burner that is worth the wait

As others have mentioned on the Amazon page for the hardcopy version of this book, it does have a slow start. At times it can feel like you're following along with a lot of characters who you don't feel much about.
Without giving too much away, this is intentional as a consequence of something done to Raine. After all, the book is written from her perspective.
By the book's conclusion I found myself to care more and more about what happened to the characters, rooting for some and decrying the actions of others.
The plot is clever and the world building is excellent. The writing, as you would expect from this author, is fantastic. His prose flows extremely well and is easy to listen to.
The narrator was well chosen. She was able to distinguish between characters well and had a good amount of emotional inflection when telling the story.
I shall eagerly await the next book and hope the narrator is kept the same.
