Summary

Mystery and Sentiment

It is hard to write a story based on the supernatural because contrivance Is needed. In Der Schimmelreiter, Hauke Haien did strangle a cat, a nasty act; but the punishment brought on him by the old woman’s curse seems extreme: the deaths of himself and his wife and child. Other elements in the story seem theatrical; the horse skeleton on the sandbank, for example, which apparently materialises as the skeletal white horse which he buys, apparently, from a devil. The rest, for example, the antipathy of Ole Peterson, is plot. A very contrived story which requires massive suspension of disbelief.

Immense is almost mawkish in its sentimentality; Buhlemanns Haus is odd, a bit of a potboiler, really; Die Regentrude, though, is charming, and comes close to its folktale forebears.

All beautifully read, in the finest examples of glittering German prose that is to be found anywhere.
