In den Tiefen des Rheins liegt ein herrliches Gold. Wer daraus einen Ring schmiedet und der Liebe entsagt, erlangt unendliche Macht. Als die Rheintöchter den Nibelungenzwerg Alberich verschmähen, raubt dieser das Gold, schmiedet den Ring und unterwirft sein Zwergenvolk.

Der Göttervater Wotan lässt indessen eine Götterburg erbauen. Ihren Erbauern, den Riesen Fasolt und Fafner, verspricht er die Göttin Freia, seine Schwägerin, als Lohn. Er bekommt Ärger mit seiner Frau und bietet statt Freia den Riesen das Rheingold an. Er steigt nach Nibelheim herab, raubt Alberich den Ring und gibt ihn den Riesen. Alberich verflucht den Ring, worauf Fafner im Streit um die Beute Fasolt erschlägt. Die Rheintöchter beklagen den Raub des Goldes, das den Neid in die Welt bringt.

Großartig!

All 4 parts offer a charming, engaging version of the long Wagner saga. Very well dramatised and not just for kids. If you fancy a short version of the Wagner work in simple German, with snippets of the music, this fits the bill very well.
